Groundwater Concentration Map Appendices Appendix A: Laboratory Data Sheets Introduction This report presents the results of the Groundwater Monitoring Report conducted to evaluate the magnitude and extent of groundwater contamination related to a petroleum release from the former underground storage tank (UST) system at The Spot located at 2267 Smokey Park Highway in Candler, North Carolina. Figure 1 shows the site location, and Figure 2 presents a site map showing the location of the current UST system, monitoring wells, and soil sampling locations. Field Activities – Monitoring Wells Eight groundwater monitoring wells and two water supply wells were sampled on June 7, 2021. Each monitoring well was sampled following a purge of approximately three (3) well volumes and allowing the groundwater parameters to equilibrate. A new, dedicated, disposable bailer with new cotton twine lanyard was used for sampling each well to prevent cross-contamination. Each water supply well was purged for a total of 20 minutes prior to sample collection. Each groundwater sample was transferred directly from the bailer to the appropriate sample container provided by the laboratory with Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) preservative. The samples were stored on ice and shipped to Pace Analytical in Asheville, North Carolina. All samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of Volatile Organics (VOCs) by EPA Method 6200B. A copy of the laboratory deliverable package is included in the Appendices of this report. Sampling Results Monitoring Wells The June 7, 2021 analytical results from The Spot are as follows: • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells MW-6, MW-7 and MW-8 did not detect targeted petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations that exceed their respective North Carolina 2L Groundwater Quality Standards (NCAC 2L MCLS). • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-1 detected 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, benzene, disopropylether, isopropylbenzene, MTBE, naphthalene, toluene, and total xylenes at concentrations exceeding their respective NCAC 2L MCLs. Concentrations of benzene exceeded the GCLs. • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-2 detected benzene and naphthalene exceeding the NCAC 2L MCLs. None of the concentrations exceeded the GCLs. • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-3 detected benzene at concentrations exceeding the NCAC 2L MCLs. The concentration of benzene did not exceed the GCLs. • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-4 detected benzene at concentrations exceeding their respective NCAC 2L MCLs. The concentration of benzene did not exceed the GCLs. • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW-5 detected 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, benzene, naphthalene, toluene, and total xylenes at concentrations exceeding their respective NCAC 2L MCLs. The concentrations detected did not exceed the GCLs. • Laboratory analysis of groundwater samples collected from water supply wells WSW-1 and WSW-2 did not detect targeted petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations that exceed the laboratory minimum detection levels. Free-product was not observed at the site on June 7, 2021. Groundwater analytical results are summarized in Table 2. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is included in Appendix A. Groundwater Flow Direction Figure 3 of this report portrays the suspected groundwater flow direction based on the depth to water on June 7, 2021. The trend of the groundwater is to the southeast. Groundwater levels are located in Table 2. MMPE Performance Recently NCDEQ asked SEI to compare the site data using a modeling program that includes natural attenuation versus MMPE. To accomplish this, SEI used Bioscreen Version 1.4 to compare the site data over the last five years (since the completion of the CSA). The highest benzene concentration of 17,500 ug/l was detected in MW-1 in May 2016. The current benzene concentration of 9,760 ug/l was detected in MW-1 in June 2021 after three MMPE events since 2019. While using Bioscreen Version 1.4, the following data was used in addition to the benzene concentrations for each model: • Seepage Velocity of 12.1 ft/yr. • Retardation Factor of 1.0t. • Length of Model area = 200 ft. • Width of Model area = 130 ft. • DO = 3.3 mg/l (Lab Data). • NO3 = 0.083 mg/l (Lab Data). • FE2+ = 14.7 mg/l (Lab Data). • SO4 = 3.6 mg/l (Lab Data). • CH4 = 0.0286 mg/l (Lab Data). Using the benzene concentrations from May 2016 and modeling a 20-year reduction, the plume would reach MW-8 (most downgradient well) with a calculated benzene concentration of 2.257 mg/l if no degradation. Assuming 1st order decay occurs 14.9 Kg of plume mass will biodegrade. Using the benzene concentrations from June 2021 and modeling a 20-year reduction, the plume would reach MW-8 (most downgradient well) with a calculated benzene concentration of 0.612 mg/l if no degradation. Assuming 1st order decay occurs 19.1 Kg of plume mass will biodegrade. The model estimated there was 28.1 Kg of hydrocarbons in the groundwater in May 2016. Currently, the model estimates there is 22.3 Kg of hydrocarbons remaining. The three MMPE events along with biodegradation have reduced the levels of hydrocarbons at the site by 5.8 Kg in 5 years. The concentration levels of benzene have dropped from 17,500 ug/l to 9,760 ug/l (44.22% drop) during the same time. Conclusions and Recommendations Based on the results of this report, SEI makes the following conclusions: • The three AFVR events have potentially assisted biodegradation in reducing the levels of hydrocarbons and benzene at the site. • Laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, and MW-5 detected targeted compounds above their respective NCAC 2L MCLs. MW-1 detected concentrations of benzene exceeded the GCLs. • Mass contaminant calculation determined a mass of 22.3 Kg for the site with most of the mass concentrated around MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4 and MW-5. Therefore, Singleton Environmental, Inc. recommends the following: • Continue Quarterly MMPE events to attempt to remove more hydrocarbons and assist with biodegradation. • Continue quarterly groundwater monitoring events after each MMPE event.
