Facility ID No. 0-0 7809
NCDEQ Incident No. 28491
Dear Mr. Murphy:
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC), on behalf of Cary Oil Company, is submitting a summary of
groundwater sampling activities conducted on April 18, 2019. The groundwater sampling event was
performed in accordance with Task Authorization Number 10, approved April 3, 2019. The activities
included the sampling of two groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1 and MW-5) at the site. A site location
map is provided as Figure 1 and a site map is provided as Figure 2.
The groundwater analytical results, summarized in Table B-4, indicated the presence of volatile organic
hydrocarbons in the sampled monitoring well on-site. The results indicate that groundwater from well MW-1
well contained EDB concentrations above the North Carolina Gross Contamination Levels (GCL). Historical
groundwater data is provided in Table B-4A. The laboratory analytical report is provided in Appendix A.
ATC recommends an additional sparge-enhanced AFVR event at the site. If you have any questions or
comments, please contact us at (704) 529-3200.
Sincerely,
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C.
Michael D. Shaw, P.G.

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC), on behalf of Cary Oil Company (Cary Oil), has prepared
a Monitoring Report for the Yogi Foods facility located in Hudson, Caldwell County, North Carolina.
This report includes information summarizing field activities conducted in July and August 2019. A
United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map that shows topographic contours, site location,
surface water bodies, buildings, and adjacent roads in the site vicinity is included as Figure 1.
A North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Notice of Regulatory Requirements
(NORR) dated June 7, 2019, required remediation and assessment activities be conducted at the Yogi Foods
site. ATC conducted an Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery (AFVR) event on July 30, 2019, and a
groundwater monitoring event on August 29, 2019. The findings of the field activities and results of the
analytical results indicate the following:
Free product was not detected in the gauged monitoring wells during any of the field activities
conducted in July and August 2019.
Benzene, 1,2-DCA, and EDB exceeded GCLs in MW-1 prior to the AFVR event.
The AFVR event removed approximately 278 gallons of petroleum-impacted groundwater, and was
calculated to recover 54.28 pounds (8.69 gallons) of petroleum as vapor.
Approximately 30 days after the AFVR event, well MW-1 contained benzene above the GCL, and
reduced by approximately 78%.
A comprehensive groundwater monitoring event has not been conducted at the site since 2017. ATC
recommends a comprehensive monitoring event be conducted approximately six months after the AFVR
(February 2020). The sampling event will evaluate the extents of the contamination plume and should
specifically utilize low-flow sampling methods to obtain an accurate and representative sample from 1-inch
monitoring well MW-1.
2.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION
The subject site is identified as the Yogi Foods facility (Facility ID No. 0-007809) and is located at 4018
Highway 321A in Hudson, Caldwell County, North Carolina. The site is accessible from Highway 321A
to the west and Adams Drive to the southeast. Properties within 1,500 feet of the site are mainly commercial
and residential on the east side Highway 321A and mainly industrial on the west side of Highway 321A. A
site map that indicates monitoring well locations and other site features is included as Figure 2.
Yogi Foods October 1, 2019
Monitoring Report Page 2
The subject property currently operates as a Shell service station with retail fuel sales and a convenience
store called Market Basket. Two 8,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) and one 8,000-
gallon diesel UST were installed in April 1985 and are currently in use at the site. A separate basin
contains one 2,000-gallon kerosene UST, which was installed in February 1976 and is also currently in
use. UST system and owner/operator information is provided in Tables B-1 and B-2. The site also
contains a single-story convenience store building and fuel dispensers associated with the USTs. Surface
cover at the site consists mostly of asphalt and concrete in the fueling and driveway areas. The surface
cover on the east portion of the property, behind the convenience store building, consists mostly of grass.
A due diligence investigation was conducted at the site on June 30, 2006. Soil samples were collected at nine
locations and submitted for laboratory analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons – gasoline range organics
(TPH – GRO). Laboratory analytical results of a soil sample collected adjacent to a gasoline and diesel
dispenser indicated a TPH – GRO concentration that exceeded the historical North Carolina Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR, currently the NCDEQ) action limit of 10 mg/kg. Cary Oil
submitted a 24-Hour Release and UST Leak Reporting Form (UST-61) to the NCDEQ on July 14, 2006.
ATC conducted a Phase II LSA in August 2014 and collected groundwater samples from wells MW-1
through MW-4. Petroleum compounds were reported above NCDEQ 2L Standards in wells MW-1, MW-2,
and MW-4. Concentrations of lead were reported above the 2L Standard in wells MW-1 through MW-4. The
concentrations of benzene and EDB reported in well MW-1 exceeded their respective GCLs.
A limited groundwater monitoring event was conducted at the site on March 24, 2016, following two AFVR
events. Petroleum compounds were reported above 2L Standards in well MW-1. The concentrations of
benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA), and EDB reported in well MW-1 exceeded their respective GCLs.
A large diameter well (MW-5) and two air sparge wells (AS-1 and AS-2) were installed at the site in August
2016. A limited groundwater monitoring event was conducted at the site on November 2, 2016, following a
sparge-enhanced AFVR event. Concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were detected above GCLs in
monitoring well MW-1, but were significantly decreased compared to historical levels and MW-5 did not
contain contaminant concentrations above GCLs.
Yogi Foods October 1, 2019
Monitoring Report Page 3
On April 20, 2017, ATC performed a limited groundwater gauging and sampling event at the site to
identify effectiveness of a sparge-enhanced AFVR event. According to the analytical results,
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were not detected above GCLs in monitoring wells MW-1 and
MW-5.
Since that time, ATC conducted limited groundwater sampling events in April 2018, and April 2019. The
analytical results from both sampling events indicated that groundwater from well MW-1 well contained
EDB concentrations above the GCL.
3.0 RECEPTOR INFORMATION
3.1 Water Supply Wells
An updated receptor survey was conducted at the site in 2012, which provided supplemental information
to an initial receptor survey conducted during a Phase I Limited Site Assessment (LSA) in 2006. One
private well (WSW-4) was identified as being used for irrigation purposes and is located approximately 315
feet from the source area. Thirteen additional water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site
but are not in use. A large concrete cover was observed at the property located at 2338 Adams Drive and
adjacent to the subject site, and was identified as a potential water supply well. The property at 2338 Adams
Drive, is supplied municipal water by the Town of Sawmills. The NCDEQ decided in December 2015 that
the potential water supply well was considered abandoned, and the site risk ranking was reduced from high to
intermediate. The receptor information is provided as Table B-5.
3.2 Public Water Supplies
Potable water is provided to the area by the Town of Sawmills and the City of Lenoir. The public water
source (Lake Rhodhiss) is not located within 1,500 feet of the subject site.
3.3 Surface Water
ATC reviewed a USGS 7.5-Minute Quadrangle Topographic Map (Figure 1) to identify surface water
bodies in the site vicinity. In addition, ATC conducted a visual reconnaissance for surface water bodies
in the area. Poplar Fish Lake is located approximately 1,100 feet to the east of the subject site.

4.0 SITE CHARACTERISTICS
4.1 Regional and Site Geology
According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina, produced by the State of North Carolina in 1985, the
site lies in the Inner Piedmont Belt of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of North Carolina. The rock
types of the Inner Piedmont have been identified as predominatly mica schist with a variety of other rock
types depending on location. The Inner Piedmont is characterized as crystalline meta-sedimantary rock.
The shallow subsurface in most areas of the Piedmont contains residual soil overburden, including
structure-free residuum, saprolite, and partially weathered rock (PWR) that derive from in-place
weathering of the crystalline bedrock. Occasional areas containing recent deposits of alluvium in the
uppermost subsurface are found near streams and rivers. Saprolite and PWR typically contain some relict
structures from the original rock material. Depth to rock ranges from ground surface at occasional
outcrops to depths of greater than 100 feet in areas of easily weathered rock.
Shallow subsurface soils observed during drilling activities at the site were described as sandy and silty clay
and sandy and clayey silt to a termination depth of approximately 35 feet below grade.
4.2 Regional and Site Hydrogeology
The shallow aquifer occurrence varies in depth from ground surface at springs, creeks, and rivers to as
deep as 50 feet or more beneath upland surfaces in some parts of the Piedmont. Water in the alluvium or
unconsolidated residual material, including saprolite and PWR, usually behaves as an unconfined aquifer,
or water table, and will yield water with head elevation equivalent to the first elevation where water was
encountered. Permeability varies with lithology and is typically relatively low in residual soils, with
higher permeability in saprolite or PWR due to relict rock texture and variable susceptibility to
weathering exhibited by different minerals in the rock. Groundwater flow in residual soils or alluvium is
usually in rough concurrence with local topographic conditions and is toward local drainage features.
The bedrock fractures or other planar features of the Piedmont Physiographic Province generally
constitute the bedrock aquifer, with the surrounding rock material being effectively impermeable. Along
with fractures, contacts between rock bodies probably constitute zones of significant groundwater
occurrence in the bedrock. The surrounding material and overlying residuum tend to make the bedrock
aquifer a semi-confined aquifer. That is, the overlying water and soil weight normally results in pressure
that causes water in a borehole, which intersects a fracture or other feature, to rise above the elevation of
Yogi Foods October 1, 2019
Monitoring Report Page 5
the fracture or feature. Modern water supply wells in the Piedmont, likely including those in the site
vicinity, are typically installed with a surface casing through the unconsolidated material, and an open
borehole into the bedrock where water-bearing fractures are encountered.
Based on data collected in November 2017, groundwater flow away from the site appears to be generally
towards the east at an average horizontal hydraulic gradient of 0.008 along a flow path that crosses the
release source area. Depth to groundwater in site monitoring wells ranged from 16.13 feet to 23.66 feet
below top of casing (TOC) on November 16, 2017. Free product was not observed in the gauged wells
and has not historically been identified on-site.
5.0 AFVR EVENT
On July 30, 2019, an 8-hour AFVR event was conducted at well MW-5. AFVR services were provided by
Contaminant Control, Inc. (CCI), with oversight provided by ATC. Prior to and at the completion of the
AFVR event, wells MW-1, MW-5, AS-1, and AS-2 were gauged using an oil/water interface probe. Free
product was not measured in gauged wells. ATC collected one groundwater sample for laboratory analysis
from well MW-1. The groundwater sample was analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via
Standard Method 6200B, and ethylene dibromide (EDB) via method 504.1. The analytical results are
discussed in Section 6.0.
During AFVR activities, a liquid ring vacuum pump unit is plumbed to the designated extraction
point, and a drop pipe is extended into the well through an airtight seal at the top of the well
casing (TOC) and into the water column. Throughout the AFVR process, a cone of depression
forms around the designated recovery point by drawing down the groundwater surface levels,
thus causing impacted water surrounding the recovery point to be extracted. Petroleum-impacted
soil vapor within the cone of depression and the overlying vadose zone is removed as part of the
AFVR extraction process.
Approximately 278 gallons of petroleum-impacted groundwater were recovered from monitoring well MW-
5 during the July 30, 2019, AFVR event. Measurable free product was not observed in the vacuum truck tank
following the event. Based on calculated recovery volumes, approximately 54.28 pounds (8.69 gallons) of
petroleum were recovered as vapor. Monitoring data, the waste disposal manifest, and emissions and

recovery calculations for this AFVR emissions are included in Appendix A. Free product recovery
information is provided in Table B-8.
6.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING
On July 30, 2019, prior to the AFVR event, ATC collected one grab sample from monitoring well MW-1.
The sample was collected with a new, disposable bailer, and poured directly into laboratory-provided
containers with appropriate preservatives. The sample was placed into a chilled cooler and submitted to
North Carolina-accredited Pace Analytical Services, Inc. (Pace), of Huntersville, North Carolina using proper
chain-of-custody procedures for laboratory analyses. The sample was analyzed by SM 6200B for VOCs and
EPA Method 504.1 for EDB. Laboratory analysis of the sample collected from well MW-1 prior to the
AFVR event indicated the following:
Benzene (11,400 ug/L), 1,2-DCA (510 ug/L), and EDB (953 ug/L via EPA 504.1) were detected
above their respective GCL.
Nine additional petroleum constituents were detected above their respective 2L Standard.
On August 29, 2019, ATC gauged and sampled monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-5 to assess the
effectiveness of the AFVR event. Groundwater elevation data for the August 2019 sampling event is
summarized in Table B-7. Prior to sampling, each well was purged of three standing water columns, or until
the well was purged dry. Samples were then collected with new disposable bailers and poured directly into
laboratory-provided containers with appropriate preservatives. The samples were placed into a chilled cooler
and submitted to Pace using proper chain-of-custody procedures for laboratory analyses. The samples were
analyzed by SM 6200B for VOCs and EPA Method 504.1 for EDB. Laboratory analysis of the samples
collected indicated the following:
Well MW-1 contained EDB (200ug/L via SM6200) above the GCL, and nine additional
petroleum constituents above their respective 2L Standard.
Well MW-5 contained four petroleum constituents above their respective 2L Standard.
The laboratory analytical reports are included in Appendix B. Current groundwater sampling results are
summarized in Table B-4, historical analytical results are included in Table B-4A. A map depicting a
summary of the constituents of concern from the July and August 2019 sampling events is included as
Figure 3.
Yogi Foods October 1, 2019
Monitoring Report Page 7
Groundwater impact above GCLs has historically been identified in wells MW-1 and MW-5 located near the
product dispensers. The July 2019 AFVR appears to have been effective at reducing the concentrations of
petroleum constituents in well MW-1 as follows: benzene by approximately 65%, toluene by 53%, 1,2-DCA
by 78%, and EDB by 78%.
7.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Groundwater impact above GCLs has historically been identified in wells MW-1 and MW-5 located near the
product dispensers. ATC conducted an Aggressive Fluid Vapor Recovery (AFVR) event on July 30, 2019,
and a groundwater monitoring event on August 29, 2019.

YOGI FOODS
DEFINITIONS
DF - Dilution Factor, if reported, represents the factor applied to the reported data due to dilution of the sample aliquot.
ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit.
TNTC - Too Numerous To Count
J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit.
MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit.
PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit.
RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and
bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix.
S - Surrogate
1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is
a combined concentration.
Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values.
LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate)
MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate)
DUP - Sample Duplicate
RPD - Relative Percent Difference
NC - Not Calculable.
SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up
U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected.
Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether.
A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA
Method 8260.
N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for
each analyte is a combined concentration.
