Groundwater Incident Number: 41575 WR Project Number: 23-0307-FA Ms. Ghiold:
WithersRavenel, Inc. (WR) has completed this Letter Report to document the Air Sparge Enhanced Mobile Multi-Phase Extraction (AS/MMPE) event described in task authorization (TA) TA-01 for the above referenced site approved May 30, 2023 under North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Contract #N70522-C. WR mobilized to the subject site on July 10, 2023, for the purpose of performing a two-week AS/MMPE event on select monitoring
wells and utilizing air sparge wells AS-1 and AS-2 for air injection. The site location is depicted on Figure 1 and site features including monitoring well locations are depicted on Figure 2. Sparge-Enhanced MMPE Event WR personnel, along with Advanced Environmental Services, Inc. (Advanced) mobilized to the
site on July 10, 2023 for the purposes of performing a two week (192-hour) AS/MMPE event. This event was initiated to reduce light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) within monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 and air sparge wells AS-1 and AS-2, and to reduce the compounds exceeding the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs) within monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4. Advanced utilized vacuum extraction equipment mounted within an enclosed trailer as well as a
6,000-gallon (gal) tanker trailer. For the AS/MMPE event, Advanced installed a 1-in diameter PVC stingers into well MW-1 and MW-4 and AS-1 and AS-2 at a depth approximately 1-ft beneath the measured groundwater elevation on July 10, 2023. These stingers were plumbed at the surface to a 2.0-in diameter
chemical resistant flexible hose, which was connected to a vacuum truck servicing the vacuum/pressure regenerative blower housed in the equipment trailer. Fluids were recovered from AS-1 for 20.5 hours and from AS-2 for 24.5 hours between July 10 and 11, 2023. Following the removal of the PVC stingers, Advanced connected to air sparge wells AS-1 and

AS-2 and utilized an air compressor to deliver air into each air sparge well. Recovered fluids were stored within a 6,000-gallon tanker trailer. For induction of air for the purposes of sparging, ½-in diameter PVC tubing was placed within AS-1 and AS-2 at depths beneath the measured groundwater elevation. This tubing was plumbed to a compressor which injected air into air
sparge wells AS-1 and AS-2. Following the setup, the AS/MMPE system was started and operated for two weeks, continuously Monday through Friday each week, for a period of 192-hours to induce movement and recovery of total fluids from MW-1, MW-4, AS-1, and AS-2. Advanced personnel monitored
the performance of the AS/MMPE system over the course of the event, adjusting the stinger depths and optimizing recovery as necessary.
On arrival, WR personnel opened and gauged monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4, MW-5, and MW-8, and air sparge wells AS-1 and AS-2 with a decontaminated product/water interface probe.
Gauging of LNAPL within these wells showed the following:
Well ID Depth to
LNAPL/Product Depth to Water Well Depth LNAPL/Product

MW-1 26.11 26.42 37.94 0.31
MW-4 --- 26.51 35.39 ---

AS-2 27.02 27.49 35.00 0.47
[All measurements shown in feet (ft)] Throughout the course of the AS/MMPE event, effluent emissions ranged from 7,000 parts per
million (ppm) to 11,000 ppm. In completion of the AS/MMPE event, a total of 8,921-gallons of fluids were recovered from MW-1, MW-4, AS-1, and AS-2 and based on mass removal calculations, a total of 232.72 pounds or 37.83 gallons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were removed as vapor. The manifest and disposal document associated with disposal are included as attachments.
After completion of the AS/MMPE event, Advanced dismantled the MMPE setup at the location. WR personnel gauged the wells with the interface probe after removal of the stingers and did not detect measurable LNAPL following the MMPE event.
Field notes and site photos for the July 2023 AS/MMPE event are included in Appendix A. The manifest, disposal documents, and the AS/MMPE report associated with the event are included in Appendix B.

Description of Event:
The MMPE event ran from 13:50 July 10, 2023, through 13:50 July 14, 2023. The operation
continued at 12:15 July 17, 2023 and ended at 12:15 July 21, 2023. The MMPE system was
active for 192.0 hours. During the event, vacuum at the recovery pump ranged from 12.0 to 17.0
inches of mercury (hg) and stabilized at approximately 12.0 inches of mercury. Airflow rates
ranged from 3,500 to 4,900 feet per minute and stabilized at approximately 4,900 feet per
minute. System temperature ranged from 91.0 – 126.0 degrees F and humidity maintained 99.0
percent throughout the event. Field gauged volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) decreased
from 22,600 parts per-million (PPM) to 4,400 (PPM) throughout the event.
Groundwater / Product Mix Recovered:
During the event a total of 8,662 gallons of product/water mix were removed from the site in
two loads and properly disposed at a certified North Carolina disposal facility. Approximately 9
gallons of measurable free product was recovered during the event. Total fluids recovered,
was measured based on stick readings conducted during and following the event. Based on 192.0
hours of operation and a total of 8,662 gallons recovered, the average groundwater recovery rate
was calculated to be approximately 45.11 gallons per hour.
Events Results:
Based on mass-removal calculations 232.72 pounds or 37.83 gallons of VOC’s were removed as
vapor. During the event, vacuum influence and drawdown readings were taken at MW-5 and
MW-8. No measurable vacuum influence was observed. Maximum drawdown measured 0.28’
in MW-5 and 0.24’ at MW-8. Following the event, no free product was identified in any
well.

NOTES
Qstd = Flow at DSCFM
Vacuum = The level of vacuum being applied should be recorded from the MMPE system (inches of Hg)
Velocity = The rate at which air flows is measured at the blower discharge piping (anemometer or pitot tube)
Pipe ID = The inside diameter of the blower discharge piping (from the MMPE system)
Temperature = The temperature of the air stream exiting the blower discharge piping (dry bulb temp., in deg.°F)
Relative humidity = The % relative humidity of the air stream exiting the blower discharge piping
Bwsw = water vapor % by weight, i.e., pounds of water per pound of dry air, derived from the Psychrometric chart (temp Vs relative humidity)
Bws = water vapor % by volume
EQUATIONS
Bws = (Bwsw/18 lb-mole H20)/[(1/28.84 lb-mole dry air) + (Bwsw/18 lb-mole H2O)]
Qstd = (1-Water Vapor) * velocity * (PI * (diameter/24)2) * (528°R/(Temp + 460))
