Highway 704 Madison, Rockingham County, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 1584-11-048A Dear Mr. Barnwell: This monitoring report includes data collected on March 15, 2013 at the Lonnie’s Texaco leaking underground storage tank incident site in Madison, North Carolina. Our services were completed in general accordance with S&ME proposal 1584-13-P020 dated March 1, 2013. In a letter from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) to Huffman Oil Companydated January 14, 2013, NCDENR requested that a Monitoring Report with data from monitor well MW-6 at the site be completed on a semi- annual basis. This report summarizes the results of first semi-annual sampling event in 2013. If you have any questions please call (336) 288-7180 at your convenience. Sincerely, S&ME, Inc. Lyndal Butler Wayne H. A groundwater sample was collected from monitoring well MW-6.Figure 2 shows the location of monitoring wells at the site. Before sampling, MW-6 was purged of three times the initial well volume with a disposable PVC bailer. The sample was handled with a new pair of latex gloves and was placed into the laboratoryprovided sampling containers. The sample was submitted to Pace Analytical Laboratories (Pace) in Harrisburg, North Carolina, for laboratoryanalysis. The sample was analyzed for volatile organics byEPA Method 6200B. Selected analytical data from the sampling event is shown in Table 1. As shown in Table 1, benzene, 1,2- dibromoethane (EDB), and naphthalene were reported in the sample collected from monitor well MW-6 at concentrations greater than their respective North Carolina groundwater qualitystandards. A copy of the laboratoryreport is included in Appendix I. Historical concentrations of select petroleum compounds are shown in Table 2. 1.2 Description of Current Plume Size and Location Because groundwater qualitydata was onlyobtained from monitor well MW-6, an estimation of the extent of dissolved petroleum impacts was not performed. Since 2004, periodic monitor well sampling events have documented dissolved petroleum concentrations greater than the groundwater qualitystandard onlyat monitor well MW-6. 1.3 Groundwater Flow Direction The depth to groundwater was only measured in monitor well MW-6; therefore, the direction of groundwater flow was not calculated. Historically, groundwater movement at the site has been toward the northeast. 1.4 Drinking Well Sampling No water supply wells were sampled during the reporting period. 1.5 Proximity of Plume to Potential Receptors The subject property uses a water supply well that is located approximately 1,200 feet south of the site. A water supply well is located on the subject site, but it is inactive. At least 15 water supply wells were confirmed to be present within 1,500 feet of the release source during the completion of the Comprehensive Site Assessment (S&ME, October 31, 2001). Groundwater Monitoring Report S&ME Project No. 1584-11-048A Lonnie’s Texaco, Madison, North Carolina April 3, 2013 2 2.ACTIVE REMEDIATION SYSTEM MONITORING 2.1 Summary of Remediation An air sparge and soil vapor extraction system was installed at the site. The system includes three sparge points: AS-1, AS-2 and AS-3 (see Figure 2), and three soil vapor extraction wells (SVE-1 through SVE-3). The system has not operated at the site since 2009. 2.2 Future Remediation Activities The March 2013 groundwater monitoring event indicates dissolved petroleum constituent concentrations have increased in monitor well MW-6 when compared to the last sampling event completed in August 2011. Monitor well MW-6 will be sampled again in the fall of 2013, as directed by NCDENR. If data from the fall 2013 sampling event indicates an increasing trend in dissolved petroleum compound concentrations in MW-6, then consideration should be given to re-energizing the air sparge and soil vapor extraction systems at the site. 3.CONCLUSIONS Dissolved petroleum constituent concentrations reported in the sample collected from MW-6 are greater than those reported for the August 2011 sampling event. However, the reported concentrations are significantly less than historically high concentrations (see Table 2). Additional monitor well sampling data should be reviewed to assess whether a trend of rising concentrations exists. S&ME completed a soil sampling event in 2004 to assess petroleum concentrations in the site soil. In 2004, several soil sample locations were reported to contain petroleum compounds at concentrations that exceed the soil cleanup criteria for the site (soil-to- groundwater Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentration). Petroleum-impacted soil may be acting as a secondary source of petroleum compounds to the site groundwater. Periodic groundwater sampling activities should continue at the site until the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) issues a Notice of No Further Action for the historical release.
