Incident Description: On January 31, 2023, a Barry’s Truck Lines Inc tractor trailer was involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a motor oil release. The release impacted the soil embankment and ravine. The release also impacted a swamp area with standing water. No drains were impacted. Emergency Response: On January 31, 2023, Local authorities, Yaupon Service Center and SMG Enviro responded to the site for towing, cleanup and remedial actions. Regulatory Notification: Pursuant to North Carolina State regulations, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality was notified. Incident number 2023-0131-11 was provided. P.O Box 1067*Athens, GA 30603* (877)-88-SPILL* Fax (888)263-7106 Corrective Action: On January 31, 2023, SMG Enviro responded to the incident. SMG personnel indicated that the unit lost its oil pan into a swamp area. SMG estimates approximately 15-gallons of oil was released. Due to the depth of the water, a water vessel was utilized to apply absorbent booms around the sheen. The water in the swamp is not moving which allowed SMG personnel to utilize a vac truck to collect some of oil impacted water. On February 1, 2023, SMG personnel continued to collect the oil from the water utilizing booms and a vacuum truck. On February 2, 2023, SMG personnel returned to the site several times to check the booms left in place due to the amount of rainfall throughout the day. On February 7, 2023, SMR personnel returned to the site to skim some of the sheen off the water. SMR personnel generated a total of 105-gallons of wastewater for disposal. Waste Disposition: On March 2, 2023, SMR personnel transported the wastewater to SR & R Environmental in Wilmington, NC for proper disposal. Please see Appendix 1 (Disposal Documentation). Conclusion: No further evidence suggests that any environmental impact remains following the emergency response and corrective action taken in response to this incident. TSS recommends that this incident be considered closed. Barry’s Truck Lines Inc and Transportation Spill Solutions appreciate your assistance regarding this matter.
