REMARKS
Ayden FD responded to a gasoline spill at local gas station. Driver for Atlantic Oil, Nathan
Tetterton, was filling gasoline storage tank which was overfilled spilling approximately 150
gallons of gasoline onto the ground. The tank was unpermitted and did not have a spill
containment dike around it. The tank was single walled. The area around the cement pad had
recently had old underground tanks removed and appeared to be very sandy in composition. Mr.
Tetterton stated he noticed the spill and stopped pumping within approximately 15 seconds. Fire
Department foamed the area twice with minimal run off. Gasoline quickly dissipated and
deemed not a fire hazard.
EM arrived on scene and interviewed all parties.

Mr. Buddy had previously removed 5 permitted unground storage tanks. The site was inspected
by local fire marshal’s office and representative from EPA.
Mr. Roscoe Whitley, Jr. was installing reconditioned 10,000 gallon vertical fuel tanks which
have not been permitted. All three tanks have been filled with gasoline or diesel. The western
tank overfilled, although their calculations showed there should have only been 7500 gallons
when it overflowed. The middle tank had 2400 gallons of non-ethanol gasoline, and the eastern
tank had 2000 gallons of non-highway diesel.
Our office has informed all parties that all fuel will be removed and the tanks placed out of
service until the proper permits and inspections have been obtained. No fuel can be placed in
tanks or fuel sold. Atlantic Oil is recovering the fuel which may take up to three days before the
tanks are empty.
*One existing above ground tank is in place and will still be in use which contains highway rated
diesel
Mr. Jeff Welti with NCDEMR was contacted with preliminary report and contact information
included. Pitt County Fire Marshal’s Office with closely monitor cleanup and remediation.
