INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this Periodic Monitoring Report is to present the results of recent monitoring
events performed at petroleum release sites located at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
(MCAS Cherry Point). Monitoring and reporting is being performed in accordance with the
MCAS Cherry Point UST Closure and Management Program adopted by MCAS Cherry Point
Environmental Affairs Department. A listing of sites for which sampling results are included in
this Periodic Monitoring Report is presented in Table I and locations of these sites are shown
on Figure I and Figure II.
This Periodic Monitoring Report is designed such that all data and information pertaining to any
individual site is contained entirely within one section of the report and each section is devoted
entirely to one site. Therefore, each section serves as a stand-alone monitoring report for the
respective site. Each section begins with an Executive Summary which provides information
about location, monitoring, groundwater hydraulics, free-phase product plumes, dissolved-
phase plumes, potential receptors, and remediation at the site. Each Executive Summary is
supported by several site-specific tables and figures.

During the previous annual monitoring event (May 2017), monitoring well
LS20GW03 revealed concentrations of Naphthalene above the 2L Standards. No
EPA Method 602 compounds were detected in Potable Well 11 during the First
Semester 2017 annual event or during the current Second Semester (November
2017) potable well sampling event (where only Potable Well 11 was sampled).
See Tables 12.2A, 12.2B and 12.2C.
EPA Method 610 by EPA Method 625
During the previous annual monitoring event (May 2017), LS20GW03 revealed
concentrations of both 2-Methylnaphthalene and Naphthalene above 2L
Standards. No EPA Method 610 compounds were detected in Potable Well 11
during the First Semester 2017 annual event or during the current Second
Semester (November 2017) potable well sampling event (where only Potable Well
11 was sampled). See Tables 12.3A and 12.3B.
MADEP VPH/EPH
During the previous annual monitoring event (May 2017), monitoring well
LS20GW03 revealed MADEP VPH/EPH contaminant concentrations exceeding
the 2L Standards. No MADEP VPH/EPH contaminant concentrations were
detected in Potable Well 11 during the First Semester 2017 annual event or during
the current Second Semester (November 2017) potable well sampling event
(where only Potable Well 11 was sampled). See Tables 12.4A and 12.4B.
Please note that site monitoring wells were not sampled if they were inaccessible
or found to contain free-phase product.

12.9 Observations and Comments
12.9.1 Historical: Previously, a CAP Addendum (CAPA) was submitted in the form of a
conceptual model in June 2010. Following approval, a Mobile Air Sparge Pilot
Test was implemented by CATLIN and SDC in the vicinity of LS20GW03, to
address the contamination in this shallow well.
The results of the Mobile Air Sparge Pilot Test were compiled in a summary report
and submitted in June 2011. CATLIN recommended continuing with episodic air
sparging on a monthly basis for three months and then re-sampling to determine
its effectiveness; however, it was decided to only monitor the site.
Long-term gauging data suggests that the intermittent appearance of free-phase
product in monitoring well LS20GW03 was likely due to fluctuations in the
groundwater table elevation. The appearance of free-phase product in August
2010 and August 2011 were at times of severe drought and low groundwater table
elevations.
Due to the shallow depth of groundwater at the subject site (approximately three to
four feet BLS), excavation of the smear zone was suggested as a potential option
to reduce gross contamination at the site. However, the extent of the “smear
zone”/shallow groundwater contamination was not adequately delineated to
accurately estimate the extent and volume of a potential excavation. Therefore, in
September 2014 CATLIN conducted an investigation at this site to define the
extent of “smear zone”/shallow groundwater contamination. The results of this
investigation indicated the extent of “smear zone”/shallow groundwater
contamination had been generally delineated and this report recommended an
evaluation of remediation alternatives, such as excavation be considered to
address the shallow dissolved-phase groundwater contamination at the subject
site.
12.9.2 Current: Free product has remained absent at this site for almost six years (last
occurrence in August 2011). Dissolved-phase contaminant concentrations are not
increasing and have remained stagnant over the past several years. The site
continues to be monitored for Natural Attenuation per the approved CAP.
However, alternative remediation approaches for achieving site closure are always
being evaluated and may be determined in the near future.
