Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: July 29, 2019 Tripp’s Service Station Project Manager: Matthew Schroeder, P.G. GRI Project No. 3243 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tripp’s Service Station is located at 6682 US Hwy 258 North in Farmville, Greene County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by William Everette Murphrey and is vacant. The adjoining properties are a mixture of single family residential and agricultural properties. According to the information determined during receptor survey activities, four water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. One inactive water supply well is within 200 feet of the site. Public water is available to the site and surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. A release was discovered in December of 1990 during construction activities on service station canopy. A CAP was submitted by UTTS Environmental in February 1992; a pump and treat system was proposed and installed at the site. This system was composed of four recovery wells that operated intermittently from 1991 to 2001. On July 22, 2013, one 6,000-gallon and one 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the site. On July 8, 2019, six monitoring wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled. The maximum allowable concentrations (MACs) were below the concentrations of MTBE and/or naphthalene reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-3 and MW-11R. Gross contamination levels (GCLs) were above all of the reported contaminant concentrations. Since July 2015 the contaminant mass has decreased by 89% through natural attenuation. Based on this information, the contaminate plume is decreasing. A plume stability analyses should be conducted. If favorable results are achieved, the site should be closed with a notice of residual petroleum (NRP) for soil and groundwater. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: July 29, 2019 Tripp’s Service Station Project Manager: Matthew Schroeder, P.G. GRI Project No. 3243 2 1.0 SITE HISTORY AND CHARACTERIZATION Geological Resources, Inc. (GRI) presents the results of the July 2019 receptor survey and the ground water sampling event at the Tripp’s Service Station site; located at 6682 US Hwy 258 North in Farmville, Greene County, North Carolina (Figure 1). These activities were conducted in accordance with GRI Proposal No. 19-114, which was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on February 13, 2019, and was approved as Task Authorization No. 6433-30 on February 22, 2019. State correspondence has been included as Appendix A. The site is currently owned by William Murphrey and is currently vacant. A release was discovered in December of 1990 during construction activities. Reportedly, one 2,000-gallon gasoline UST was closed- in-place in 2003. On July 22, 2013, one 6,000-gallon and one 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the site. A pump and treat remediation system was installed at the site in 1991 and operated intermittently from 1991 to 2001; the remediation system was decommissioned in July-August 2013 during soil excavation activities. The site is currently ranked as high risk due to one inactive water supply well located within 200 feet of the site. UST owner/operator information and UST system information are included as Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The Registered Tank Report is shown below: The site and surrounding area is a mixture of single family residential and agricultural properties. The site contains one buildings (former store) and is primarily capped with gravel. The overall topography at the site is relatively flat. No surface water bodies were identified within a 500-foot radius of the site. Eleven Type II monitoring wells (MW-1 through MW-11) , one Type III telescoping well DW-1 and four recovery wells (RW-A, RW-B, RW-1 and RW-2) were installed at the site during previous ground water assessment activities. Wells MW-10, MW-11, RW-A, RW-B, RW-2, MW-4, and DW-1 have been abandoned or destroyed. Monitor well MW-11R was installed to replace MW-11 in 2015. A Site Map showing the locations of the monitoring wells and the structures on-site has been included as Figure 2. A Corrective Action Plan (CAP) was submitted by UTTS Environmental in February 1992, that proposed to remove free product and reduce contaminant concentrations to at or below gross contamination levels ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: July 29, 2019 Tripp’s Service Station Project Manager: Matthew Schroeder, P.G. GRI Project No. 3243 3 (GCLs) from the site utilizing a pump and treat system. This system was composed of four recovery wells that operated intermittently from 1991 to 2001. On July 22, 2013, one 6,000-gallon and one 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the site. In June 2015, additional soil excavation activities were initiated in the immediate vicinity of MW-11 to reduce the ground contaminant levels. On July 8, 2019, GRI personnel conducted an updated receptor survey at the site. Four water supply wells were identified within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. One inactive water supply well was found within 200 feet of the site. Well owners were contacted to determine if they were willing to abandon their respective wells. No responses have been received at the submittal of this report. County water is available to the site and surrounding properties. Water Supply Well information is include in Table 3 and adjacent property owner information is presented in Table 4. A Site Vicinity Map showing the adjacent properties has been included as Figure 3. 2.0 PRESENTATION OF CURRENT SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION/ COMPARISON TO HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT INFORMATION On July 8, 2019, six Type II monitoring wells (MW-2, MW-3, MW-5, MW-7, MW-11R and MW-12) and one recovery well (RW-1) were gauged, purged and/or sampled. MW-3 could not be effectively purged due to an obstruction in well. Depths to ground water in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 4.38 feet to 7.23 feet. Ground water elevations in the Type II monitoring wells ranged from 93.95 feet to 95.53 feet. Ground water flow was generally to the southeast with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.01 feet per foot. Well construction and gauging information is presented in Table 4. A Water Table Surface Map based on the Type II monitoring wells is included as Figure 4. A summary of the current ground water gauging data is shown below: Well ID Screened Interval (x to y ft. GCLs were above all of the reported contaminant concentrations. A summary of the analytical results for ground water samples collected on July 8, 2019 is presented in Table ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. The July 2015 sampling event was the 1st ground water sampling event post soil excavation. Based on these data, the contaminant mass has been reduced by 89%. Contaminant mass reduction calculations have been included as Appendix C. A map of the contaminant mass area has been included as Figure 6. A chart depicting the overall declining trend in contaminant mass is shown below: The site is located in the Coastal Plain Physiographic Province of North Carolina. Four water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. One Water supply well was found within 200 feet of the site.  On July 8, 2019, six Type II monitoring wells and one recovery well were gauged, purged and/or sampled. Ground water flow was generally to the southeast with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.01 feet per foot.  The MACs were below the concentrations of MTBE and/or naphthalene reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-3 and MW-11R. GCLs were above all of the reported contaminant concentrations.  Contaminant mass has decreased by 89% from 2015 to present through natural attenuation.  Based on this information, the contaminant plume is decreasing. A plume stability analyses should be conducted. If favorable results are achieved, the site should be closed with a NRP for soil and groundwater. 6.0 LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Rand Wade Oil Company for specific application to the referenced site in Greene County, North Carolina.
