Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: February 3, 2021 Red Apple Market #9 Project Manager: William Regenthal, P.G. GRI Project No. 4497 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The former Red Apple Market #9 is located at 100 West Jackson Street in Rich Square, Northampton County, North Carolina. The site is currently owned by Jernigan Properties, Inc. and is operated by Duck Thru Food Stores as a petroleum retail facility. One 8,000-gallon gasoline, one 5,000-gallon gasoline, two 3,000-gallon gasoline, two 3,000-gallon #2 fuel oil and one 2,000-gallon kerosene USTs were removed and/or abandoned in place in July 1992 confirming the presence of a release. Currently, one 10,000-gallon and one 6,000-gallon gasoline and one 4,000-gallon kerosene USTs are in use at the site. The adjoining properties are a mixture of commercial and residential properties. According to the information determined during receptor survey activities, no water supply wells were identified within 1,500 feet of the site. Public water is available to the site and surrounding properties within a 1,500-foot radius of the site. A Correct Action Plan (CAP) has not been submitted for the site. Free product recovery events have been conducted at the site beginning in August 2017. On January 6, 2021, four Type II monitoring wells, MW-11 through MW-14, were installed at the site. MW-11 through MW-14 were each installed to a total depth of 17 feet below ground surface (ft bgs) with a screened interval of 15 feet. On January 6, 2021, thirteen Type II and one Type III monitoring wells were gauged, purged and/or sampled in accordance with the NCDEQ Guidelines. Free product was observed in MW-1. Concentrations of benzene, MTBE, naphthalene and/or n-propylbenzene that exceeded the Maximum Allowable Concentrations (MACs) as specified in T15A NCAC 2L.0202 were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-11, MW-13 and MW-14. All of the reported contaminant concentrations were less than the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). Upon completion of the January 2021 sampling event, an absorbent sock was installed in MW-1. Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain intermediate risk. Free product recovery events should continue to be conducted at the site until free product is no longer present and contaminant concentrations are below the GCLs. Semi-annual ground water monitoring should continue at the site. The next sampling event is tentatively scheduled for July 2021. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Contaminant mass calculations cannot be completed at this time. The site is located in the Coastal Plain Physiographic Province of North Carolina. The water table has a seasonal high depth to water of approximately 3 to 17 feet below ground surface (bgs). Please note that while free product recovery events have been conducted, a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) has not been developed for the site; therefore, a baseline contaminant mass prior to CAP implementation has not been established at the site. Please note that milestones have not been established for this site. 4.0 FREE PRODUCT REMOVAL Free product has historically been present in MW-1. Free product recovery should continue at the site until free product is no longer present. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Geological Resources, Inc. Ground Water Monitoring Report Prepared on: February 3, 2021 Red Apple Market #9 Project Manager: William Regenthal, P.G. GRI Project No. 4497 5 Free product levels in MW-1 have been greatly reduced since the initiation of free product recovery at the site; however, the free product thickness increased between the January 2020 and the January 2021 sampling events. Based on the increased free product thickness, as well as the relatively limited amount of free product recovered as vapor during historical AFVR events, AFVR may not be the most effective or cost-efficient method of free product removal. MMPE events have historically yielded greater recovery with a lower cost per gallon recovered. Past free product recovery events are summarized in Tables 6, 7 and 8. Upon completion of the January 2021 sampling event, an absorbent sock was installed in MW-1. 5.0 NATURAL ATTENUATION / NATURAL SOURCE ZONE DEPLETION STATUS Free product recovery events are being conducted at the site as the primary method of corrective action. Due to the site being in the active remediation phase, no natural attenuation monitoring plan is currently in place at the site. 6.0 CONCLUSIONS  On January 6, 2021, thirteen Type II monitoring wells and one Type III monitoring well were gauged, purged, and/or sampled. Monitoring well MW-1 contained free product and was not sampled. Ground water flow was generally to the south-southeast from hydraulic highs at MW- 5 and MW-1 with a horizontal gradient of approximately 0.16 feet per foot. The vertical gradient between paired wells MW-4 and MWD-6 was approximately 0.18 feet per foot in the downward direction.  Concentrations of benzene, MTBE, naphthalene, and/or n-propylbenzene that exceeded the MACs were reported in the ground water samples collected from MW-2, MW-11, MW-13 and MW-14. All of the reported contaminant concentrations were less than the GCLs.  Upon completion of the January 2021 sampling event, an absorbent sock was installed in MW-1.  Based on this information, the risk classification for the site should remain intermediate risk. Free product recovery events should continue to be conducted at the site until free product is no longer present and contaminant concentrations are below the GCLs. Semi-annual ground water monitoring should be continued at the site. The next sampling event is tentatively scheduled for July 2021. 7.0 LIMITATIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Red Apple Markets, Inc. for specific application to the referenced site in Northampton County, North Carolina.
