EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Work at the site was suspended in 2011 due to the site rank. DEQ has required that the water supply survey be updated and that the site monitor wells be sampled. There are no water supply wells within 1,000 feet of the site and the contaminant levels have decreased substantially. No compounds were detected above their gross contaminant level. Monitor well 1A, the source well from the 2010 tank closure, was not sampled. It is covered by a four inch concrete pad and a walk in refrigeration unit. C. SITE HISTORY and CHARACTERIZATION Texaco Food Mart is a former convenience store that sold petroleum products from an underground storage tank system. Two releases have occurred: (1) incident 21962 – discovered in 2000, and (2) incident 37731 – piping release discovered by the 2010 UST removal. MW-1A was installed for incident 37731 at the piping release point. Benzene (6570 ppb) was the only compound detected above its gross contaminant level in this well. E. SITE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION 1.0 WATER SUPPLY WELL / RECEPTOR SURVEY The 2011 water supply well survey showed no water supply wells within 1,000 feet of the site. The survey was updated by the following: (1) area walkover to check for water meters and wellheads, and (2) check with the City of Lexington Public Works Department. All developed properties have a public water meter and no wellheads were observed. The water department stated that it serves all developed properties within 1,000 feet of the site and it is unaware of any water supply wells in the area. The closest surface water is a south flowing creek that is 1,200 feet southwest of the site. 2 2.0 MONITOR WELL SAMPLING 2.1 Sampling Protocol Monitor wells 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and vertical monitor well 1 were sampled February 14, 2022. They were sampled with individual, new, disposable bailers after first gauging the wells and then purging three well casing volumes. The samples were placed in laboratory provided 40 ml vials, fixed with a chain of custody, and placed on ice for shipment between the field, office, and laboratory. They were refrigerated at our office until delivery to PACE Analytical on September 16, 2022. 2.2 Sampling Results The samples were analyzed by methods 6200B; a summary follows. MW-1: dry, MW-1A: no sample – covered by post construction, MW-2: benzene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene > standard, but < GCL, MW-3: MTBE > standard, but < GCL, MW-4: benzene and MTBE > standard, but < GCL, MW-5: no compounds > standard, MW-6: no compounds detected, MW-7: no compounds > standard, and VMW-1: no compounds detected. The former sampling event was March 17, 2011. A comparison between these events follows. MW-3: BTEX non detect both events / MTBE decreased from 77,700 ppb to 179 ppb, MW-4: BTEX/MTBE substantial decreases, and MW-7: BTEX non-detect to negligeable levels both events / MTBE decreased from 669 ppb to 5 ppb. The analytical results are presented in Table B-4, Table 1 is a historical summary of the sampling results, and the laboratory analyses are attached. Individual BTEX/MTBE maps are attached. F. FREE PRODUCT – not applicable G. SOIL REMEDIATION – not applicable H. GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION - natural attenuation 3 I. CONCLUSIONS Benzene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene in MW-2 are the only compounds detected above their groundwater standard; all three are well below their gross contaminant level. Benzene in MWs 1A and 4, and MTBE in MW-3 were the only detections that exceeded their gross contaminant level in the March 2011 sampling event. The contaminant levels in MW 1A and 4 were comparable in the 2011 sampling event; especially benzene, which was 6570 ppb in MW 1A and 6950 ppb in MW 4. Compound levels have decreased significantly in MWs 3 and 4 since the 2011 sampling event. Benzene dropped from 6950 ppb to 12 ppb in MW-4. Based on the contaminant decreases since 2011, and considering the 2011 benzene levels in MWs 1A and 4, it is reasonable to assume that benzene in MW 1A has decreased to a level below its gross contaminant level (5000 ppb) – reasonable but an assumption. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS This analyte exceeded secondary source verification criteria high for the initial calibration. The reported results should be considered an estimated value.IH Analyte recovery in the laboratory control sample (LCS) was above QC limits. Results for this analyte in associated samples may be biased high.L1 Matrix spike recovery and/or matrix spike duplicate recovery was outside laboratory control limits.M0 Matrix spike recovery exceeded QC limits.
