(GES), on behalf of Murphy USA (MUSA) is pleased to provide this summary of site assessment activities completed at Murphy USA Store #8570 located at 800 Retail Way, Louisburg, NC 27549. A Site Location Map is included as Figure 1. A map of the site is included as Figure 2. Site assessment activities were performed in response to all three UST Sumps failing hydrostatic testing. On March 22, 2022, GES personnel arrived onsite with a licensed well drilling contractor, Versatile Environmental Resources Company, Inc. (VERCO), to collect soil samples in the immediate vicinity of the UST sumps. GES also retained Taylor Wiseman & Taylor, Inc. (TWT) to perform a private utility locate in the vicinity of the UST system and proposed boring locations. GES collected groundwater and soil samples after sump repair activities were previously completed onsite (one diesel and two unleaded) on behalf of MUSA. Three (3) soil borings (SB-1, SB-2 and SB-3) were placed as close as reasonably possible to the subject sumps within the UST system. In general, the soil borings were located within concrete surfacing along the outer perimeter of the UST pit and advanced into native material. The soil borings were progressed via a hand auger through gravel backfill until native soil was reached (approximately 3.5 - 4.5 feet below ground surface (BGS)) at each boring location. The hand auger was used to advance each boring to 8 feet BGS for utility clearance purposes. A Geoprobe® was used to advance the soil borings through native soil greater than 8 feet BGS to approximately 15 feet BGS. Soil from each boring was collected for classification, field screening, and laboratory analysis. Recovered soils were split for field screening and laboratory analysis. The portion utilized for field screening was placed in a sealable air-tight bag with head space and allowed to volatilize for approximately 15-minutes at an ambient temperature of approximately 68 degrees Fahrenheit (°F). Field screening was accomplished by using a Honeywell MiniRAE 3000+ photo-ionization detector (PID) calibrated to a 100-parts per million (ppm) isobutylene standard. The tip of the PID was used to pierce the bag and the maximum response was recorded as the headspace was withdrawn. GES personnel collected soil samples along the perimeter of the UST system for confirmatory laboratory analysis (SB-1 through SB-3). Groundwater samples (SB-2 Water) were collected through a 2-foot stainless steel screen point sampler after soil boring SB-2 was advanced to 32- feet BGS. The soil and groundwater samples were placed on ice and submitted to Pace Analytical Services, LLC for analysis by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015C for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons – Diesel Range Organics (TPH–DRO) and Gasoline Range Organics (TPH-GRO), EPA Method 8260 for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and EPA Method 8270 for Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs). A summary of field data is provided below; elevated PID readings (>50 ppm) were not detected. Boring/Sample ID Depth (feet) PID (ppm) Soil Type Sample Date/Time SB-1 10.0-12.0 0.0 Silty Sand 3/22/22 – 1:10 SB-2 10.0-12.0 1.0 Silty Sand 3/22/22 – 2:10 Limited Site Check Report Murphy Express #8570 800 Retail Way, Louisburg, NC 27549 Page 2 SB-2 (water) 30.0-32.0 N/A N/A 3/22/22 – 2:40 SB-3 10.0-12.0 2.0 Silty Sand 3/22/22 – 3:55 The native soil type encountered was silty sand. Soil samples were retained from soil borings SB- 1, SB-2 and SB-3 at a depth interval of 10-feet BGS to 12-feet BGS for laboratory analysis. Groundwater was not encountered within the borings except for SB-2 when extended to 32-feet BGS for the purpose of collecting groundwater samples. Soil borings were backfilled and abandoned with Portland cement grout and the concrete cored surface repaired to original condition. Soil samples did not have any exceedances of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentration (MSCC) Levels. For the VOC analysis, reporting limits for 1,2-Dichloroethane (EDB) were above the NCDEQ MSCCs for each soil sample but there were non-detect results for all samples. For the semi-volatiles analysis, reporting limits for Benzo(a)anthracene, Benzo(a)pyrene, Dibenz(a,h)anthracene, 1- Methylnaphthalene and Naphthalene were above the NCDEQ MSCCS for each soil sample but there were non-detect results for all samples also. Groundwater samples collected from the SB-2 boring location did not have any exceedances of the NCDEQ 2L Standards. For the VOC analysis, reporting limits for EDB were above the NCDEQ 2L Standards but the result was non-detect. For the semi-volatiles analysis, reporting limits for Benzo(a)anthracene, Benzo(a)pyrene and Dibenz(a,h)anthracene were above the NCDEQ 2L Standards but the results were non-detect also. A summary of the analytical results can be found on Table 1 through Table 5, and are depicted in Figure 3 and Figure 4. The Laboratory Analytical Report is included as Appendix A. The Soil Boring Logs are included as Appendix B. Based on analytical results being below the NCDEQ MSCCs for soil and below the NCDEQ 2L Standards for groundwater, GES recommends no additional work to be conducted. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL - Adjusted Method Detection Limit. PQL - Practical Quantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. LCS(D) - Laboratory Control Sample (Duplicate) MS(D) - Matrix Spike (Duplicate) DUP - Sample Duplicate RPD - Relative Percent Difference NC - Not Calculable. SG - Silica Gel - Clean-Up U - Indicates the compound was analyzed for, but not detected. Acid preservation may not be appropriate for 2 Chloroethylvinyl ether. A separate vial preserved to a pH of 4-5 is recommended in SW846 Chapter 4 for the analysis of Acrolein and Acrylonitrile by EPA Method 8260. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine decomposes and cannot be separated from Diphenylamine using Method 8270. The result reported for each analyte is a combined concentration. Reported results are not rounded until the final step prior to reporting. Therefore, calculated parameters that are typically reported as "Total" may vary slightly from the sum of the reported component parameters. Pace Analytical is TNI accredited. Contact your Pace PM for the current list of accredited analytes. TNI - The NELAC Institute. ANALYTE QUALIFIERS Analyte is a possible laboratory contaminant (not present in method blank).C7 Result may be biased high due to carryover from previously analyzed sample.C8 The precision between the sample and sample duplicate exceeded laboratory control limits.D6 This analyte exceeded secondary source verification criteria high for the initial calibration. The reported results should be considered an estimated value.IH This analyte exceeded secondary source verification criteria low for the initial calibration. The reported results should be considered an estimated value.IL Matrix spike recovery exceeded QC limits. Batch accepted based on laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery.M1 The reported TIC has an 85% or higher match on a mass spectral library search.N The lab does not hold NELAC/TNI accreditation for this parameter but other accreditations/certifications may apply.
