The soil was encountered adjacent to an existing combustion turbine unit. Duke Energy stopped work, contacted the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), and on November 17, 2022 conducted sampling of the stockpiled soil and the soil in the base of excavation associated with the installation of the cathodic protection equipment. Duke Energy had the soil samples analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) Diesel Range Organics (DRO) and Gasoline Range Organics (GRO). In addition to TPH-DRO and TPH-GRO, Duke Energy had a sample collected from the stockpile for analysis of Poly- Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) metals to aid in profiling for disposal purposes. The TPH-DRO results exceed the NCDEQ Action Level.
