Subject: Use of Supply Well for Irrigation
Almont - New
Between Cowan and Hanover Streets
Wilmington, New Hanover Co.
Brownfields Project Number 10040-06-65
Dear Mr. Lisk:
The analytical results, received from you via email on January 22, 2014, for the analysis
of groundwater collected from the recently installed irrigation well on the subject property has
been reviewed. The results indicate that iron and ammonia are present at concentrations above
groundwater standards.
Iron was detected in the groundwater at 1.24 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The standard
for iron is 0.3 mg/L. However, iron is naturally occurring and is commonly found in this area,
particularly in the Castle Hayne Aquifer in which this well has been installed, at levels exceeding
the groundwater standard. As such, the iron is not considered a concern for the groundwater
being used for irrigation purposes.
Ammonia was detected in the groundwater at 10.3 mg/L. The standard for ammonia is
1.5 mg/L. However, the concentration of ammonia detected in the groundwater from this deep
supply well is consistent with, or far below ammonia concentrations detected in the overlying
groundwater across the site. As such, the application of groundwater from this well onto the
ground surface for irrigation purposes would not deteriorate the quality of the surficial
groundwater at the site.
Given the above discussion, the Brownfields Program does not object to the use of
groundwater from the recently installed deep supply well to be used for irrigation purposes on
the site under the following conditions:

1. The groundwater may not be used for any purpose other than irrigation.
2. The groundwater may not be used to supply any fish cleaning stations or wash -down
hoses at the marina.
3. Any outlets for the water system conveying this groundwater, with the exception of the
sprinkler and sprayer heads used for irrigation, must be clearly marked as non -potable
water.
4. An Irrigation Plan must be created, approved by DENR, and implemented that minimizes
or eliminates over -irrigation and runoff into the Cape Fear River.
The approval to use the groundwater for irrigation purposes at the site may be rescinded if any of
the conditions above are not complied with.
Please contact me at 910-796-7408 or samuel.watson@ncdenr.gov if there are any questions.
