Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 1054-14-2086 1.0 INTRODUCTION S&ME, Inc.'s scope of services were performed in general accordance with proposal number 43- 14000148 Revision 1.2, dated February 26, 2014, and as authorized by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) Task Authorization dated February 26, 2014 under Contract #N10005S. S&ME completed the following scope of services approved for this task authorization: • Prepared a site specific health and safety plan; • Installed nine soil gas probes; • Collected soil gas samples from each of the soil gas probes; • Collected a water supply well sample from water supply well WSW-1; and, • Prepared this report. 2.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The AMI, Inc. site is located at 2609 Tucker Street, Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina. A groundwater plume containing chlorinated hydrocarbons has been documented in the shallow and bedrock groundwater aquifers. The primary chemicals of concern (COCs) in groundwater are tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and the degradation daughter products of PCE and TCE (Additional Investigation; Kleinfelder; April 12, 2011). A vicinity map is provided as Figure 1 and the site and the surrounding area shown in Figure 2. On March 25, 2014, Mr. Adam Ulishney of NCDENR Inactive Hazardous Sites Branch (IHSB) contacted Mr. Edmund Woloszyn of S&ME requesting a proposal to assess properties proximal to the AMI, Inc. site for COCs in soil vapor. S&ME proposed to use a Geoprobe drill rig to install post -run tubing (PRT) system to approximately 10 feet below ground surface (ft. bgs.) to collect soil vapor samples. Mr. Ulishney also requested that if groundwater was encountered at 10 ft. bgs. or above, that a temporary monitor well be installed and a groundwater sample collected. In addition, IHSB requested the sampling and analyses of a water supply well located at 2523 Tucker Street, which is located north of the AMI, Inc. site. This report presents the field methods of the assessment conducted at the AMI, Inc. site, the laboratory analytical results of soil gas and water samples collected, and conclusions. Soil Vapor and Water Supply Well Sampling Report AMI, Inc. Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina 3.0 METHODS 3.1 Health and Safety Plan May 19, 2014 S&ME Project No. 1054-14-2086 S&ME prepared a site -specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP) in general accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120, which addressed the contaminants known or suspected to be present on -site, personal protective equipment, monitoring performed during the field activities, and response actions to be taken in the event monitoring thresholds are exceeded. To mitigate the potential for damage to underground utilities, S&ME contacted One Call and retained the services of a private utility locating service to clear the locations for the PRT borings. 3.2 Soil Vapor Sampling Between April 8 and April 10, 2014, S&ME installed and sampled nine soil vapor points using the PRT system. The PRT system was advanced by a track -mounted Geoprobe 7730DT using 1.5-inch direct push rods. The PRT system was installed to target depths of between nine and 10 ft. bgs. Groundwater was not encountered in any of the borings; therefore, no temporary monitoring wells were installed, and no shallow groundwater samples were collected. Following installation of the PRT system, S&ME performed a leak test. The sampling array was tested for leaks by placing a plastic shroud over the soil vapor monitoring point and injecting helium (tracer) gas into the plastic shroud. The sampling array was monitored for leaks by monitoring the tracer gas using a helium detection meter that was connected to the sampling array. No tracer gas was detected in any of the nine sampling arrays, indicating that the sampling array did not have leaks. After successfully passing the leak test, a six -liter SUMMA canister equipped with a three hour regulator was connected to each sampling array. A total of nine record samples were collected, along with one QA/QC split sample. The SUMMA canisters were shipped to ESC Lab Sciences (ESC) of Mt Juliet, Tennessee for analysis. The samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Method TO-15 SIM standard parameter list. After the soil vapor samples were collected, S&ME removed the stainless steel casing materials and filled the boreholes with a mixture of soil and bentonite clay. The locations of the soil vapor probes were recorded with a mapping grade sub -meter GPS unit. A photographic log of the activities performed is provided in Appendix I. 3.3 Water Supply Well Sampling On April 9, 2014, S&ME personnel sampled one water supply well, WSW-1, located at 2523 Tucker Street. A spigot at the wellhead was opened, and the water allowed to flow for approximately 15 minutes. Field parameters of pH, temperature, and conductivity were measured and recorded. The field parameter measurements sheet is provided in Appendix II. After purging, two samples were collected, one record sample and one replicate sample, placed directly into laboratory supplied containers, and shipped under standard chain -of -custody procedure to ESC for analysis. The samples were analyzed for VOCs by EPA Method 8260B. Soil Vapor and Water Supply Well Sampling Report May 19, 2014 AMI, Inc. Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina S&ME Project No. 1054-14-2086 3.4 Quality Assurance/Quality Control S&ME collected QA/QC samples for soil vapor and water supply well samples. A "split" sample was collected at vapor point VP-6 by installing a split sample train, to which a summa canister was attached at both ends. Each of the split samples were allowed to draw until the regulators had collected sufficient volume for analysis. The split sample was submitted to ESC for laboratory analysis by EPA Method TO-15. One duplicate sample was collected from water supply well WSW-1. The sample was collected in series after the record sample and submitted for laboratory analysis for VOCs by EPA Method 8260B. In addition, one trip blank was included in the cooler and analyzed for VOCs. 4.0 RESULTS 4.1 Soil Vapor Sampling Results The laboratory analytical results of the soil vapor samples collected on April 9 and 10, 2014, indicated that PCE and TCE were reported at concentrations above the sub -slab and exterior vapor intrusion screening levels (VISLs) in sample VP-4. Sample VP-4 was collected at the property located at 1006 Hahn Road. During the field activities, it was noted that this property has a basement. Additional constituents were reported in samples VP-1 through VP-9 at concentrations above the reporting limits, but below the VISLs. The laboratory analytical results for the soil vapor samples is presented in Table 2, and shown on Figure 3. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is provided in Appendix III. 4.2 Water Supply Well Sampling Results The laboratory analytical results of the record and duplicate samples collected from water supply well WSW-1 indicated that two constituents, PCE and TCE, were reported at concentrations above the 2L Standards. A summary of the water supply well analytical results is provided in Table 2, and shown in Figure 3. A copy of the laboratory analytical report is provided in Appendix III. 4.3 Quality Assurance/Quality Control Results According to the laboratory analytical results, the QA/QC split sample for the soil vapor sample of VP-6 were similar in comparison. Benzene, chloromethane, and ethylbenzene were reported in both VP-6 and the split sample (DUP-1) and comparable concentrations. However, the record sample VP6 had reported concentrations of carbon tetrachloride and PCE near the method's detection limit. Whereas carbon tetrachloride and PCE were below the method's detection limit of the split sample DUP-1. The results of the duplicate water supply well sample DUP-2 were well within ten percent of the results of the record sample WSW-1. No VOCs were reported in the trip blank. The analytical results of the QA/QC soil vapor and water samples are provided in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Soil Vapor and Water Supply Well Sampling Report AMI, Inc. Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina 5.0 CONCLUSIONS 5.1 Soil Vapor May 19, 2014 S&ME Project No. 1054-14-2086 Soil vapor sample analytical results indicate that COCs reported at the AMI, Inc. site are present in sub -surface soils near the residences along Hahn Road. One soil vapor sample, VP-6, which is located at 1006 Hahn Road, had reported concentrations of PCE and TCE above the sub -slab and exterior VISLs. The residence located at this address has a basement, and may be a possible receptor of PCE and TCE through vapor intrusion from the soil into the basement. 5.2 Water Supply Well The laboratory analytical results of the water supply well sample, WSW-1, collected at 2523 Tucker Street, indicated that PCE and TCE were detected at concentrations above the 2L Standards. S&ME was told by Mr. Gary Oakley, the property owner, that this well is not used as a source of potable water; however, the future use of the well from this well may need to be evaluated for possible exposure to the COCs. The quality control samples include a method blank, a laboratory control sample, and the matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate analysis. If a target parameter is outside the method limits, every sample that is effected is flagged with the appropriate qualifier in Appendix B of the analytic report. Method Blank - an aliquot of reagent water carried through the entire analytic process. The method blank results indicate if any possible contamination exposure during the sample handling, digestion or extraction process, and analysis. Concentrations of target analytes above the reporting limit in the method blank are qualified with the "B" qualifier. Laboratory Control Sample - is a sample of known concentration that is carried through the digestion/extraction and analysis process. The percent recovery, expressed as a percentage of the theoretical concentration, has statistical control limits indicating that the analytic process is "in control". If a target analyte is outside the control limits for the laboratory control sample or any other control sample, the parameter is flagged with a "J4" qualifier for all effected samples. Matrix Spike and Matrix Spike Duplicate - is two aliquots of an environmental sample that is spiked with known concentrations of target analytes. The percent recovery of the target analytes also has statistical control limits. If any recoveries that are outside the method control limits, the sample that was selected for matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate analysis is flagged with either a "J5" or a "J6". The relative percent difference (%RPD) between the matrix spike and the matrix spike duplicate recoveries is all calculated. If the RPD is above the method limit, the effected samples are flagged with a "J3" qualifier.
