(ATC) has completed a Groundwater Monitoring Report (GMR) documenting the installation of MW-4 on September 20, 2019, and the sampling of monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-4 at Greenfield Market, located at 1076 Friendship Road, Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. The GMR is being performed based on an August 26, 2019 Task Authorization (TA-02) and an August 26, 2019 Change Order, by the Trust Fund Branch of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section, Division of Waste Management, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). The work is being performed as part of the State Lead Contract #N17004 between NCDEQ and ATC. The property formerly contained one 2,000-gallon gasoline and one 550-gallon kerosene UST that were removed in October 2004. The property currently contains one 8,000-gallon gasoline, one 4,000-gallon gasoline, one 2,000-gallon diesel, and one 1,000-gallon kerosene UST. This GMR documents impact conditions likely related to the former UST system. Per TA-02, ATC installed MW-4 downgradient of MW-2, and collected groundwater samples from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2 and MW-4 for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Standard Method 6200B. The findings from the groundwater monitoring event indicate the following:  Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) was not detected in monitoring wells;  Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 contained VOCs at concentrations greater than the 15A NCAC 2L .0202 groundwater quality standards (2L Standards).  None of the concentrations detected in wells MW-1 or MW-2 exceeded the Gross Contamination Levels (GCLs). The methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) concentration in well MW-2 decreased to 16,000 µg/L, compared to the prior concentration of 34,000 µg/L;  Toluene was the only VOC detected in monitoring well MW-4 at a concentration less than the 2L Standard; and  Based on the groundwater elevations, groundwater flow is generally to the south-southeast. Overall, the VOC concentrations appear to have no definitive trend sampling event. ATC is in the process of obtaining bids for the removal of the UST system, with limited soil excavation and soil sampling to be conducted at that time. ATC recommends that monitoring well MW-1 be abandoned prior to the removal of the USTs, and that a replacement monitoring well be installed and sampled following completion of the UST removal activities. Subsequent actions may include conducting an aggressive fluid vapor recovery (AFVR) event to reduce the dissolved phase petroleum constituents in the two monitoring wells. Groundwater Monitoring Report December 20, 2019 Greenfield Market – NCDEQ Incident #27798 ATC Project #SLP2779802 3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION 3.1 Site Characterization The NCDEQ retained ATC to provide environmental consulting services for Greenfield Market, located at 1076 Friendship Road, Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. Figure 1 depicts the site location on a topographic map. The site operates as a convenience store, however, the USTs are not currently in use. Four water supply wells have been previously identified within 1,000 feet of the site. Municipal water is available to the site and site vicinity. Figure 2 indicates the location of water supply wells in the site vicinity, and Table 1 provides the water supply well information. 3.2 Site Background The property formerly contained one 2,000-gallon gasoline and one 550-gallon kerosene USTs that were removed in October 2004. The property currently contains one 8,000-gallon gasoline, one 4,000-gallon gasoline, one 2,000-gallon diesel, and one 1,000-gallon kerosene UST. During the 2004 UST removal, soil contamination was noted. Limited soil excavation was performed due to the presence of the remaining USTs. A Groundwater Monitoring and Site Check was completed in May 2007, with the installation of monitoring well MW-1 and placement of 12 soil borings (B-1 through B-12). A Phase I Limited Site Assessment was performed in September 5, 2009. Groundwater monitoring reports were completed for the site in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. According to the reports, four water supply wells were identified within 1,000 feet of the site, and municipal water is supplied to the area. Monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-3 were installed separately as part of continued assessment activities. Monitoring well construction details are provided in Table 2. ATC performed groundwater monitoring activities at the site on February 22, 2018. Groundwater monitoring results indicated a MTBE concentration above the GCL in monitoring well MW-2. Multiple petroleum constituents were detected above 2L Standards in monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2. No petroleum constituents were detected in monitoring well MW-3 above laboratory detection limits. Based on the results of the February 2018 sampling event, ATC recommended the installation of a shallow groundwater monitoring well approximately 60 feet downgradient of MW-2. 3.3 Site and Regional Geology According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina, produced by the State of North Carolina in 1985, the Site lies in the Charlotte Belt of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of North Carolina. The rock type at the site has been identified as metamorphic rock, specifically fine- grained biotite gneiss which is strongly foliated with minor layers of amphibolite and muscovite schist. The shallow subsurface in most areas of the Piedmont contains residual soil overburden, including structure-free residuum, saprolite, and partially weathered rock (PWR) that derive from in-place weathering of the crystalline bedrock. Occasional areas containing recent deposits of alluvium in the uppermost subsurface are found near streams and rivers. Saprolite and PWR typically contain some relict structures from the original rock material. Depth to rock ranges from ground surface at occasional outcrops to depths of greater than 100 feet in areas of easily weathered rock. Groundwater Monitoring Report December 20, 2019 Greenfield Market – NCDEQ Incident #27798 ATC Project #SLP2779802 Soils encountered during the installation of MW-4 consisted of silty clays, and clayey silts. 3.4 Site and Regional Hydrogeology The shallow aquifer occurrence varies in depth from ground surface at springs, creeks, and rivers to as deep as 50 feet or more beneath upland surfaces in some parts of the Piedmont. ATC encountered groundwater between 21.96 feet and 22.12 feet below the top of casings (ft-TOC) in the monitoring wells at the site during the September 23, 2019 monitoring event. Water in the alluvium or unconsolidated residual material, including saprolite and PWR, usually behaves as an unconfined aquifer, or water table, and will yield water with head elevation equivalent to the first elevation where water was encountered. Permeability varies with lithology and is typically relatively low in residual soils, with higher permeability in saprolite or PWR due to relict rock texture and variable susceptibility to weathering exhibited by different minerals in the rock. Groundwater flow in residual soils or alluvium is usually in rough concurrence with local topographic conditions and is toward local drainage features. Based on the data from the monitoring well network, shallow groundwater flows generally to the south. Depth to water at the site is approximately 35 feet below ground surface (ft-bgs), based on the field measurements collected from the site monitoring well network. The bedrock fractures or other planar features of the Charlotte Belt Physiographic Province generally constitute the bedrock aquifer, with the surrounding rock material being effectively impermeable. Along with fractures, contacts between rock bodies probably constitute zones of significant groundwater occurrence in the bedrock. The surrounding material and overlying residuum tend to make the bedrock aquifer a semi-confined aquifer. Modern water supply wells in the Piedmont, likely including those in the site vicinity, are typically installed with a surface casing through the unconsolidated material, and an open borehole into the bedrock where water- bearing fractures are encountered. 4.0 MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION As part of TA-2, ATC installed one groundwater monitoring well, MW-4, to delineate the horizontal extent petroleum impact. Prior to drilling activities, ATC notified the North Carolina one-call. On September 20, 2019, ATC and a North Carolina-registered well driller, Environmental Drilling & Probing Services (EDPS), mobilized to the site to install one groundwater monitoring well. Monitoring well MW-4 was installed to downgradient of MW-2. Figure 3 depicts a site map showing monitoring well locations and other pertinent site features. Monitoring well MW-4 was installed using a track mounted GeoProbe®, equipped with hollow stem augers to a depth of approximately 26 ft-bgs. The well was installed as a Type II, 2-inch diameter, schedule 40 PVC monitoring well with 10 feet of 0.010-inch factory-slotted well screen from the base of the borehole and riser casing extended to ground surface. ATC also measured the TOC elevation for MW-4 using an existing monitoring well. Table 2 includes the monitoring well construction details. The well construction records and soil boring logs are included in Appendix A. Field notes are included in Appendix B. Appendix C contains a photographic log of MW-4 with respect to site features. Groundwater Monitoring Report December 20, 2019 Greenfield Market – NCDEQ Incident #27798 ATC Project #SLP2779802 5.0 GROUNDWATER CHARACTERIZATION 5.1 Groundwater Levels On September 23, 2019, ATC measured the depth to groundwater from the top of well casing (TOC) using an oil/water interface probe. Groundwater elevations were then calculated based on TOC elevations, which were measured during prior groundwater assessments. The depth to groundwater and elevation data are summarized in Table 3. A groundwater elevation map is presented in Figure 4, however, since the three wells are situated in an approximate line, groundwater surface elevation contours are not presented. Historically, groundwater flow has generally been to the south-southeast, and the recent groundwater elevations indicate the same. Field notes from the groundwater sampling event are presented in Appendix B. 5.2 Groundwater Quality On September 23, 2019, groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW- 2, and MW-4. A three-volume well purge was implemented prior to groundwater sample collection to ensure representative groundwater samples. ATC also measured field parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, and oxidation reduction potential) of the purge water (Table 4). The water samples were collected in laboratory-supplied, preserved containers; entered into chain of custody control; placed on ice; and shipped to North Carolina accredited Pace Analytical Services, LLC in Huntersville, North Carolina. The groundwater samples were analyzed by Standard Method 6200B for VOCs including petroleum constituents. The analytical report is included in Appendix D. Current groundwater analytical results are summarized in Table 5. Historical groundwater analytical results are shown in Table 6. Figure 5 depicts groundwater quality data for dissolved phase petroleum hydrocarbons detected above 2L Standards. The groundwater analytical results were compared to the 2L Standards and GCLs. Groundwater analytical results indicated the following:  LNAPL was not detected in the monitoring wells;  Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 contained VOCs at concentrations greater than the 2L Standards.  None of the concentrations detected in wells MW-1 or MW-2 exceeded the GCLs. Toluene was the only VOC detected in monitoring well MW-4 at a concentration but less than the 2L Standard; and  Based on the groundwater elevations, groundwater flow is generally to the south-southeast. Overall, the VOC concentrations appear to have no definitive trends either increasing or decreasint.. As part of ATC’s quality assurance and quality control (QA and QC) measures, a data review of the laboratory reports was conducted. During the review, it was found that the samples were received from the laboratory in acceptable condition and properly preserved. The samples were analyzed within correct holding times and reported within the lab report, and the chain of custody was properly completed by all parties. The laboratory QC report shows that an internal blank was analyzed for each method that was used for the original samples. The laboratory fortified blank Groundwater Monitoring Report December 20, 2019 Greenfield Market – NCDEQ Incident #27798 ATC Project #SLP2779802 (LFB) and laboratory control sample (LCS) data results were also provided for each analytical method. Refer to the laboratory report in Appendix D for details regarding QA results for the laboratory samples and any noted exceptions. Overall, ATC concludes that the laboratory results are usable and any exceptions do not significantly impact the conclusions presented in this report. 6.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS On behalf of the Trust Fund Branch of the UST Section, ATC has completed a GMR documenting field activities conducted between September 20 and 23, 2019, as a monitoring event for Greenfield Market, located at 1076 Friendship Road in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. The findings from the recent and historical assessment activities indicate the following:  Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 contained VOCs at concentrations greater than the 2L Standards, but less than the GCLs. VOC concentrations appear to have no definitive trend either increasing or decreasing.  Groundwater flow is to the south-southeast, with the depth to groundwater ranging from approximately 22 to 27 ft-bgs.  Four water supply wells are located within 1,000 feet of the site, with the nearest well located approximately 250 feet southwest of the source area, and the other wells approximately 550 feet to the north, 750 feet to the east-northeast, and 900 feet to the south.
