Tryon\brownfields\Soil Characterization\Report\HD Supply BF Soil Characterization Tree Pit Soil.doc 2.0 Soil Characterization Activities The soil characterization activities detailed in this report were performed in general accordance with the DEQ approved Soil Characterization Work Plan (Work Plan), DEQ’s Inactive Hazardous Sites Branch (IHSB) Guidelines for Assessment and Cleanup (Guidelines) dated October 2015 and most recent versions of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region IV Science and Ecosystem Support (SESD) Field Branches Quality System and Technical Procedures guidance. On March 22, 2019, H&H collected soil characterization from two tree pits previously dug in Sections 3 and 5 at the locations depicted on Figure 2. H&H advanced three soil borings approximately 0.5 ft bgs into the sidewalls and base of both pits. Soil borings were advanced using a decontaminated stainless-steel hand auger. During boring advancement, H&H logged recovered soil for lithological description and field screened the soil for indications of potential impacts including visual observation for staining and the presence of organic vapors using a photoionization detector (PID). Upon advancing the soil borings to approximately 0.5 ft bgs, soil aliquots were collected from each boring in a pit and placed in a decontaminated Pyrex glass bowl. The soil was then homogenized to generate one soil sample from both pits for laboratory analysis (TP-COMP-3 and TP-COMP-5). The soil sample collected from each pit were placed into dedicated laboratory-supplied sample containers and packed in an iced laboratory supplied cooler. The samples were transported under standard chain-of-custody protocol to Pace Analytical Services (Pace) for analysis of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by EPA Method 8270 and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) metals by EPA Method 6020/7174. Additionally, samples were submitted to the laboratory “on-hold” for analysis of hexavalent chromium by EPA Method 7199 pending results Ms. Carolyn Minnich April 4, 2019 Page 3 S:\AAA-Master Projects\Beacon Partners- BEP or BCP\BCP-064 1414 and 1422 S. Tryon\brownfields\Soil Characterization\Report\HD Supply BF Soil Characterization Tree Pit Soil.doc of total chromium analytical results. 3.0 Analytical Results Soil analytical results are summarized on Table 1. The laboratory analytical results are provided in Attachment 1. Analytical results were compared to DEQ’s Inactive Hazardous Sites Branch (IHSB) Residential and Industrial/Commercial Preliminary Soil Remediation Goals (PSRGs). Analytical results are summarized below: • Analytical results did not indicate the presence of PAHs at concentrations above laboratory method detection limits in either soil sample. • Arsenic was detected in both samples at concentrations above Residential PSRGs, but below Industrial/Commercial PSRGs and at concentrations consistent with background metal detections in soil samples collected at the Big Bertha Brownfields Site. • Total chromium was detected at somewhat elevated concentrations of 283 mg/kg (TP- COMP-3) and 52.7 mg/kg (TP-COMP-5). As such, H&H requested the laboratory analyze the hexavalent chromium samples. Analytical results indicated the presence of hexavalent chromium in sample TP-COMP-3 at a concentration of 0.78 J mg/kg which is above the Residential PSRG, but below the Industrial/Commercial PSRG. Hexavalent chromium was detected at concentrations up to 0.507 J mg/kg in background samples collected at the Big Bertha Brownfields Site. Hexavalent chromium was not detected above laboratory method detection limits in sample TP-COMP-5. • No other metals were detected at concentrations above Residential or Industrial/Commercial PSRGs. Ms. Carolyn Minnich April 4, 2019 Page 4 S:\AAA-Master Projects\Beacon Partners- BEP or BCP\BCP-064 1414 and 1422 S. Tryon\brownfields\Soil Characterization\Report\HD Supply BF Soil Characterization Tree Pit Soil.doc 4.0 Recommendations Based on the results of the soil characterization activities, H&H recommends that soil at the former HD supply Brownfields Site be transferred to the Big Betha Brownfields Site as needed for use of fill material. Because hexavalent chromium was detected in one soil sample and arsenic was detected in both samples at concentrations slightly above Residential PSRGs, soil transferred to the Big Bertha Site should be placed below a minimum of 2 ft of clean material or placed under and impervious surface such as an asphalt parking lot, concrete foundations, concrete patios, and/or concrete sidewalks. NATIONWIDE.GLOSSARY OF TERMS Guide to Reading and Understanding Your Laboratory Report The information below is designed to better explain the various terms used in your report of analytical results from the Laboratory. This is not intended as a comprehensive explanation, and if you have additional questions please contact your project representative. Abbreviations and Definitions (dry)Results are reported based on the dry weight of the sample. [this will only be present on a dry report basis for soils]. MDL Method Detection Limit. MDL (dry)Method Detection Limit. RDL Reported Detection Limit. RDL (dry)Reported Detection Limit. Rec.Recovery. RPD Relative Percent Difference. SDG Sample Delivery Group. U Not detected at the Reporting Limit (or MDL where applicable). Analyte The name of the particular compound or analysis performed. Some Analyses and Methods will have multiple analytes reported. Dilution If the sample matrix contains an interfering material, the sample preparation volume or weight values differ from the standard, or if concentrations of analytes in the sample are higher than the highest limit of concentration that the laboratory can accurately report, the sample may be diluted for analysis. If a value different than 1 is used in this field, the result reported has already been corrected for this factor. Limits These are the target % recovery ranges or % difference value that the laboratory has historically determined as normal for the method and analyte being reported. Successful QC Sample analysis will target all analytes recovered or duplicated within these ranges. Original Sample The non-spiked sample in the prep batch used to determine the Relative Percent Difference (RPD) from a quality control sample. The Original Sample may not be included within the reported SDG. Qualifier This column provides a letter and/or number designation that corresponds to additional information concerning the result reported. If a Qualifier is present, a definition per Qualifier is provided within the Glossary and Definitions page and potentially a discussion of possible implications of the Qualifier in the Case Narrative if applicable. Result The actual analytical final result (corrected for any sample specific characteristics) reported for your sample. If there was no measurable result returned for a specific analyte, the result in this column may state “ND” (Not Detected) or “BDL” (Below Detectable Levels). The information in the results column should always be accompanied by either an MDL (Method Detection Limit) or RDL (Reporting Detection Limit) that defines the lowest value that the laboratory could detect or report for this analyte. Uncertainty (Radiochemistry)Confidence level of 2 sigma. Case Narrative (Cn) A brief discussion about the included sample results, including a discussion of any non-conformances to protocol observed either at sample receipt by the laboratory from the field or during the analytical process. If present, there will be a section in the Case Narrative to discuss the meaning of any data qualifiers used in the report. Quality Control Summary (Qc) This section of the report includes the results of the laboratory quality control analyses required by procedure or analytical methods to assist in evaluating the validity of the results reported for your samples. These analyses are not being performed on your samples typically, but on laboratory generated material. Sample Chain of Custody (Sc) This is the document created in the field when your samples were initially collected. This is used to verify the time and date of collection, the person collecting the samples, and the analyses that the laboratory is requested to perform. This chain of custody also documents all persons (excluding commercial shippers) that have had control or possession of the samples from the time of collection until delivery to the laboratory for analysis. Sample Results (Sr) This section of your report will provide the results of all testing performed on your samples. These results are provided by sample ID and are separated by the analyses performed on each sample. The header line of each analysis section for each sample will provide the name and method number for the analysis reported. Sample Summary (Ss)This section of the Analytical Report defines the specific analyses performed for each sample ID, including the dates and times of preparation and/or analysis. Qualifier Description J The identification of the analyte is acceptable; the reported value is an estimate. 1 Cp 2Tc 3Ss 4Cn 5Sr 6Qc 7Gl 8Al 9Sc ACCOUNT:PROJECT:SDG:DATE/TIME:PAGE: Pace Analytical - Huntersville, NC 92422710 L1084044 04/03/19 11:00 9 of 12 ACCOUNT:PROJECT:SDG:DATE/TIME:PAGE: Pace Analytical - Huntersville, NC 92422710 L1084044 04/03/19 11:13 9 of 12 Page 32 of 35 ONE LAB.
