The April 25, 2006 letter indicated that four monitoring wells (MW-5B, MW-5C, MW-6, and MW-7) and the adjacent stream are to be sampled annually and analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8260 or equivalent. The monitor wells and stream sample locations are illustrated on Figure 3. 2. SCOPE OF SERVICES 2.1 Surface Water and Groundwater Sampling On January 20, 2011, S&ME collected one upstream sample (SW-U) and one downstream (SW-D) surface water sample at the approximate locations shown on Figure 3. The SW-U sample was collected from the bridge, using a disposable bailer. The SW- D sample was collected by directly dipping the sample container into the stream with care not to allow sediment to enter the sample containers and not to allow overfilling to prevent the loss of any preservatives, if present. Sample containers with appropriate preservatives were provided by the laboratory. On January 20, 2011, S&ME also collected groundwater samples from the following monitor wells: MW-5B, MW-5C, MW-6, and MW-7. Prior to sampling, the depth to water in each well was measured from the top of the well casing (TOC) and the monitoring wells were purged of three to five well volumes (or until dry) using a disposable bailer. The samples were submitted to Pace Analytical Laboratories, Inc. (Pace) in Huntersville, North Carolina, a North Carolina-certified laboratory, for the analysis of VOCs by EPA Method 8260. In addition to the four monitor well samples, one duplicate sample of MW-5C (identified as Duplicate) was additionally analyzed for quality control purposes. Copies of the field sampling forms are included in Appendix II. The purge water was contained in a 55-gallon drum for off-site disposal. A purgewater sample was collected for laboratory analysis for disposal purposes. The purge water will be disposed off-site at a permitted facility as appropriate for hazardous or non-hazardous waste. Documentation of disposal, (i.e., waste manifest and invoice), will be provided to Polymers Center of Excellence upon receipt by the disposal company. S&ME will also provide a copy of that documentation to the NCDENR, if requested by the NCDENR. 3. RESULTS 3.1 Groundwater Flow The depth to water in the surficial aquifer ranged from 10.45 feet below the top of casing (flush mount well) in monitor well MW-7, to 30.42 feet below the top of casing (~2.5 feet stickup) in the monitor well MW-5B. The January 2011 groundwater levels ranged from approximately 3 to 4 feet lower than the January 2010 groundwater levels. Based 2011 Annual Monitoring Report S&ME Project No. 1354-11-006 Reeves Site, Brownfields Site No. 08022-04-60, Charlotte, NC January 31, 2011 3 on the top of casing elevations and the depth to water (Table 1), the groundwater flow is generally toward the east-southeast in the general direction of Doby Creek under a hydraulic gradient of approximately 0.043 ft/ft between monitoring wells MW-5B and MW-6, and approximately 0.016 ft/ft between monitoring wells MW-6 and MW-7 (Figure 3). The local vertical hydraulic gradient calculated using water levels measured in nested monitoring wells MW-5B and MW-5C is approximately 0.004 ft/ft in the downward direction. 3.2 Surface Water Quality VOCs were not detected in the two surface water samples (SW-U and SW-D). The results are summarized in Table 2, and a copy of the laboratory report is included in Appendix I. 3.3 Groundwater Quality No VOCs were detected in the groundwater samples from the downgradient monitor well MW-7. Tetrachloroethene was detected in monitor wells MW-5B [17.1 micrograms per liter (µg/L)], MW-5C (1.1 ug/L), and MW-6 (35.9 µg/L), compared to the 15A NCAC 2L .0202 groundwater quality standard (2L Standard) of 0.7 µg/L. The levels of tetrachloroethene are depicted on Figure 4. Chloroform was detected in MW-5C (1.1 ug/L) and the duplicate of MW-5C (1 ug/L). No other VOCs were detected in monitoring wells MW-5B, MW-5C, or MW-6. The results are summarized in Table 2, and a copy of the laboratory report and the Chain-of-Custody form are included in Appendix I. The sample results for the drummed purge water (IDW –DRUM) indicated 6.1 µg/L of tetrachloroethene. The 2011 concentrations of tetrachloroethene were higher than those detected in 2011; however, historical concentrations have been higher than the 2011 concentrations.
