The set of samples for Beazer (sampled 5/30-31/90) contained 8
water samples including 1 pair of duplicates and two blanks.
Samples were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and
dibenzofurans by high-resolution gas chromatography /high-resolution
mass spectrometry.

All elements were successfully analyzed in all samples with the
exception of those qualified as unreliable, ''R". Areas of concern
with respect to data usability are listed according to the
seriousness of the problem. These include:
Major Issues
OCDD was detected in the TLI and field blanks. Therefore positive
results are qualified ''R'', unreliable.
Minor Issues
In.the comparison of Field Duplicates (Table 1), 1234678 HpCDD and
2378-TCDF exceeded quality control criteria. Therefore positive
results are qualified ''J", estimated.

Notes
All samples were reextracted due to low internal standard
recoveries.
Triangle Laboratories adopted a new procedure for calculating
analyte specific detection limits. This procedure uses 2
representative noise height determinations which are summed and
multiplied by an empirically determined factor before applying the
detection limit equations. The effect of this approach is to
increase the detection limits of the DB-5 column by a factor of 5
and that of the DB-225 column by 3.5. The laboratory states that
the new procedure produces a more accurate estimate of detection
limits.
The laboratory performed the required 5 point initial calibrations
but did not supply raw data and chromatograms for the individual
calibrations. Checks of response factors and retention times
could, therefore, not be performed.
The data were reviewed according to Method 8290 (June 1987), an
isotope-dilution high resolution mass spectrometric version of RCRA
Method 8280 (SW846), Triangle Laboratories' Data User Manual and
the National Functional Guidelines for Evaluating Organic Analyses.
The text of this report addresses only those problems affecting
usability.

TECHNOLOGIES
The set of samples for Beazer (sampled 6/2-6/90) contained 52 soil
samples including 6 pairs of field duplicates. No field blanks
accompanied the data package. Samples were analyzed for Isopropyl
Ether, Phenols,· Silver, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium,
Mercury, Lead and Selenium. Isopropyl ether was analyzed by EPA
Method 602; phenols were analyzed by Method 8040; metals were
analyzed by methods of the EPA's Contract Laboratory Program (CLP).

All compounds were successfully analyzed in all samples with the
exception of those qualified as unreliable "R". Areas of concern
with respect to data usability are listed according to the

The matrix spike recovery for selenium (-6.4%) was below the 30%
quality control limit. Therefore detection limits are qualified
"R", unreliable.

Minor Issues
Phenol, 2, 4-dimethylphenol and 4-ni trophenol were detected in
laboratory blanks at concentrations greater than required detection
limits. Therefore sample results less than five times the highest
blank concentrations of these compounds are qualified ''U". Note
that the laboratory subtracted the blank concentrations from sample
results (see Appendix B Support Documentation). These

The set of samples for Beazer (sampled 6/21/90) contained four soil
samples, one field blank, and one trip blank. The samples were
analyzed for isopropyl ether and phenols. Isopropyl ether was
analyzed by U.S. EPA Method 8020 and phenols were analyzed by
U.S. EPA Method 8040.
Summary
All elements were successfully analyzed in all samples. Areas of
concern with respect to data usability are listed according to the
seriousness of the problem.
Quality control criteria were met for all parameters.
Notes
2, 4-Dimethylphenol was detected in a laboratory blank. This
concentration was then subtracted out for other sample results.
The practice of subtracting out to adjust for blank contamination
is not consistent with U.S. EPA methodology.

TECHNOLOGIES
The set of samples for Beazer-Raleigh (sampled 6/6/90 -6/7/90)
contained 15 samples. These included 3 water samples, 10 soil
samples, and 2 rinsate blanks. The samples were analyzed for
metals and cyanide by methods of the U.S. EPA's Contract Laboratory
Program (CLP).
Summary
All elements were successfully analyzed with the exception of those
qualified as unreliable "R". Areas of concern with respect to data
usability are listed according to the seriousness of the problem.
Note that the Summary of Data Qualifiers (Table 1) lists the
specific samples which were affected. These include:
Major Issues
The matrix spike recovery was less than 30 percent for antimony,
selenium, and cyanide. Detection limits of associated samples are
flagged as unreliable, "R''· Positive results of associated samples
are qualified as estimated, ''J".
Minor Issues
Aluminum, arsenic, barium, calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron,
manganese, sodium, and zinc were detected in laboratory blanks at
levels which required qualification of data. Positive sample
results with concentrations less than 5 times the amounts present
in the blanks are qualified ''U".
