These activities were conducted in accordance with the 2011 request from North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NC DENR) Division of Water Quality (DWQ) to conduct surface water sampling on a quarterly schedule. Surface water samples were collected from eight discrete locations (URS-SW-02, URS-SW-03, URS-SW-05, URS-SW-09, URS-SW-I 5, URS-SW-I 6, URS-SW-22, and URS-SW-T4) during February 2011. Sample locations URS-SW-02, URS-SW-03, URS-SW-05, URS-SW-16, URS- SW-22, and URS-SW-T4 arc in the Northern Drainage Feature and sample location URS-SW-09 is in the Southern Drainage Feature. Sample location URS-SW-15 is overland !low from groundwater seepage prior to discharge into the Northern Drainage Feature. Surface water sampling locations are shown on Figure I. Surface water samples were analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS) and the following volatile organic compounds (VOCs): tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2- dichloroethene (cDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Samples were also analyzed for general water quality indicator parameters including: pH, temperature, specific conductance, oxidation- reduction potential (ORP), and dissolved oxygen. Analytical and water quality results for the samples arc tabulated in Table I and shown on Figure I. The following conclusions can be made based upon the data presented in Table I and Figure I. • PCE and its daughter compounds were not detected in the Northern Drainage Feature at the upstream sample location URS-SW-02. PCE was detected at downstream sample location URS-SW-05 (0.60 .I µg/1) at a concentration which docs not exceed North Carolina 213 Surface Water Criteria. The surface water sample locations above the NC 28 Surface Water Criteria were along the portion of the Northern Drainage Feature extending from the upstream (west) side of the property owned by El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG) downstream to Wendover Road at URS-SW-T4. These results arc consistent with previous sampling events. Historical surface water sampling results are presented in Table 2. • PCE and its daughter compounds were detected in surface water within the Northern Drainage Feature at locations URS-SW-T4 (4.6 µg/1 PCE), URS-SW-03 (8.7 r1g/l PCE), URS-SW-16 (16.8 rig/I PCE), and URS-SW-22 (I 0.5 rig/I PCE). Similarly, URS Corporation August 2011 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Surface Water Assessment FCX (Statesville) Supertund Site (OU3) Statesville, North Carolina PCE and its daughter compounds were detected in a sample collected in overland flow from groundwater seepage prior to discharge into the Northern Drainage Feature (URS-SW-15). • PCE was detected 111 the Southern Drainage Feature at location URS-SW-09 at a concentration (1.2 rig/I) which does not exceed North Carolina 2B Surface Water Criteria. Based upon these findings, URS recommends the following: I. Continue quarterly surface water monitoring. This sampling was initiated in February 2011 and will continue in May 2011. 2. Continue with the current remedial alternatives evaluation which 1s underway to address surface water impacts.
