These activities were conducted in accordance with the 20 I 0 request from NC DENR Division of Water Quality (DWQ) to conduct surface water sampling on a quarterly schedule. Surface water samples were collected from six discrete locations (URS-SW-03, URS-SW-05, URS-SW-09, URS-SW-16, URS-SW-22, and URS-SW-T4) during September 20!0. Sample locations URS-SW-03, URS-SW-05, URS-SW-16, URS-SW-22, and URS-SW-T4 are in the Northern Drainage Feature, and sample location URS-SW-09 is in the Southern Drainage Feature. Surface water sampling locations are shown on Figure 1. Upstream sampling location URS-SW-02 and groundwater seepage location URS-SW-15 were dry and these locations were not sampled in September 20 I 0. Surface water samples were analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS) and the following volatile organic compounds (VOCs): tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2- dichloroethcne (cDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Samples were also analyzed for general water quality indicator parameters including: pH, temperature, specific conductance, oxidation- reduction potential (ORP), and dissolved oxygen. Water quality results for the samples are tabulated in Table 1 and shown on Figure I. The following conclusions can be made based upon the data presented in Table I and Figure I. o PCE and/or its daughter compounds were not detected in the Northern Drainage Feature at the downstream sample locations URS-SW-T4 and URS-SW-05. Consistent with the previous Surface Water Assessment Reports, the surface water sample locations above the NC 2B Surface Water Criteria were along the portion of the Northern Drainage Feature extending from the upstream (west) side of the property owned by El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG) downstream to Wendover Road. PCE is not detected downstream of the former pond. o PCE and/or its daughter compounds were detected in surface water within the Northern Drainage Feature at locations URS-SW-03 (10.8 ,tg/1), URS-SW-16 (12.1 ,1g/l), and URS-SW-22 (5.0 µg/1). URS Corporation January 2011 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Surface Water Monitoring FCX (Statesville) Supertund Site (OU3) Statesville, North Carolina o PCE was detected in the Southern Drainage Feature at location URS-SW-09 at a concentration (2.7 µg/1) that does not exceed North Carolina 2B Surface Water Criteria. o Detections of PCE and/or its daughter compounds in surface water were generally consistent with previously completed 2009 and 2010 assessment results. Based upon these findings, URS recommends the following: 1. Continue quarterly surface water monitoring. This sampling was initiated in September 2010 and will continue in December 2010. 2. Continue with the current remedial alternatives evaluation that is underway to address surface water impacts.
