Our original submission of our Q3 DMR showed that we exceeded our benchmark value for aluminum. We asked our lab to re -run the sample to ensure the accuracy of the results originally reported. The re -run showed that the lab did have an error and our aluminum results are now reported to be 740 ug/L. We are sending a copy of the updated lab report with this DMR. In response to our aluminum concentrations being higher than we are accustomed to seeing, we launched an investigation. The investigation found that, due to a change in storage practices in our scrap yard, one of our grades of scrap metal is now being stored closer to a. storm drain than it had been in previous months. We have added a mesh screen to the drain to prevent high concentrations of metals from getting into our storm water. We will continue to monitor our storm water sample results closely. Please let us know if you need any additional information. ND - Not Detected at or above adjusted reporting limit. TNTC - Too Numerous To Count J - Estimated concentration above the adjusted method detection limit and below the adjusted reporting limit. MDL -Adjusted Method Detection Limit. POL - Practical Ouantitation Limit. RL - Reporting Limit - The lowest concentration value that meets project requirements for quantitative data with known precision and bias for a specific analyte in a specific matrix. S - Surrogate 1,2-Diphenylhydrazine decomposes to and cannot be separated from Azobenzene using Method 8270. The result for each analyte is a combined concentration. Consistent with EPA guidelines, unrounded data are displayed and have been used to calculate % recovery and RPD values. These DMR's are part of the on going monthly Tier Two monitoring requirements established after exceeding the benchmark limits for two consecutive monitoring periods. A sample was obtained from storm water discharge outfall DSNO03-0312 during a single storm event on February 9, 2015, there were no discharge from DSNO02 and DSNO04 outfall. Outfall DSNO03 contains runoff from the Melt Shop Area, paved road behind the Melt Shop, and storm drains located by Central Maintenance area. Pollutants in this outfall are created by residual runoff from mobile equipment, raw materials (Lime or Carbon), Co -Product (Slag), and Billet Yard used to storage billets. The analytical results showed an exceedance in Copper. These pollutants are currently managed by vacuum sweeping the road on a daily basis, which is a contracted service. Structural control included storm water ponds that capture storm water from storm drains located in the area describe above. This water is captured in the storm water pond to allow particulates suspended in the water to go through the sedimentation process to minimize particulates if discharge occurs. Current corrective actions are to continue with existing best management practices. In addiction to the best management practices, plans are in process to dredge the South Pond to create more volume in the pond to prevent the moving of water to the North Pond. In addition the improvement South Pond Improvement, the internal management of transferring water will be modified to only transfer water when retention ponds is above 75% capacity. The will prevent the potential of a discharge and allow storm water to complete the sedimentation process in the event a discharge occur. If you have any questions regarding this DMR report or any other matters related to storm water, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at (704)596-0361, ext 3128.
