To whom it may concern:
Vulcan Construction Materials, LLC (Vulcan) operates its Spruce Pine Quarry facility in
Mitchell County, North Carolina Region under NPDES General Permit—COC No. NCG020511.
Vulcan exceeded a limitation for a recent third quarterly sample at our outfall 001. As Specified
in Section D of the NPDES General Permit we are giving notice.
We have determined that do to the slurry pipe had become disconnected in the pit and short-
circuited the settling time of the water to the discharge point and the specific gravity of the
material we are mining is lighter were contributing factors for this water results of 0.9 more than
10 NTU's. Historically turbidity results show less than 5 NTU's. Additional sample was
grabbed and has been analyzed; the turbidity results show less than 10 NTU's.
Enclosed you will find two signed copies of the DMR, and the lab results for your files.
