D. Site Drainage System Design The calculations for the runoff of the pre-development and post-development conditions were obtained using the Modified Rational method. The calculations are based on the criteria presented in the City of Dunn Drainage Manual along with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Storm Design Manual. The storm events analyzed were the 1yr, 2yr, 5yr, 10yr, 25yr, 50yr, and 100yr. The overall contributing drainage areas delineated for the drainage analysis are approximately 10.94 acres. Pre-Development Drainage Area Summary • Pervious Area 5.39 ac 0.15 • Impervious Area: 4.95 ac 0.85-0.95 The proposed drainage conditions will closely follow the existing drainage patterns.Storm water detention for this project will be provided by detention pond along the west portion of the project. The pond will also serve as a sediment basin during construction. Post-Development Site Conditions • Pervious Area 3.22 ac 0.15 • Impervious Area: 6.33 ac 0.85-0.95 Table 1.Pre-Development Peak Flow Summary Storm Pre-Development Event Flow Rate(cfs) 1-YR 30.36 2-YR 35.68 5-YR 41.30 10-YR 45.82 25-YR 51.04 50-YR 54.98 100-YR 58.51 The Primary SCM selected for treatment as well as reduction of storm water flows post development is a Wet Pond or Retention Pond. The Simple Method for Runoff Volume was used to determine the design volume for the Temporary Pool. According to Section B of the NCDEQ manual the Design Volume was calculated by using the equations below. R„ = 0.05 +0.9 *!A Where: R„ = Runoff coefficient (unitless) IA = Impervious fraction(unitless) DV = 3630 * RD * Rv *A Where: DV = Design Volume (cub.ft) RD = Design Storm Depth (in) A = Drainage Ara(ac) The design storm depth,RD,used for this project was 1.0-inch due to this project being located outside of Coastal Counties as well as SA waters. 6.33 ac) ) = 0.65 9.55 ac DV = 3630* 1 in* 0.65 *9.55 ac = 22,525 f t3 The Design Volume was then used to calculate the Main Pool Volume of the Primary SCM using Equation 1 in Section C-3 of the NCDEQ Manual. HRT Where: VMP = 0.87* Ts *DV 0.87=Factor to adjust for the volume in the forebay VMP=Main pool volume, not including the forebay(cubic feet) HRT=Required hydraulic residence time(14 days) Ts=Average time between storm events(5 days) DV=Design volume(cub feet) 14 days VMP = 0.87* 5 days * 22,525 f t3 - 54,875 f t3 There are also two Forebays included in this design which were sized using 15% of the Main Pool Volume. The minimum required Forebay volume was calculated at 8,231 ft3 as such the proposed design provided a combined Forebay volume of 9,282 ft3. Based on the table above along with the outlet protection calculations, the riprap class was found to be "Class 2" E.Conclusions Using the Modified Rational method pre/post analysis it was determined that the use of the proposed detention pond will be enough to release runoff at or below the pre-development rates for the 1yr,2yr,Syr, 10yr,25yr,50yr, and 100-yr storm events. The detention pond was designed in accordance with the criteria presented in the City of Dunn drainage Manual along with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality(NCDEQ)Storm Design Manual. There is no negative impact anticipated to the existing drainage pathways. The drainage design in this report will control and minimize any adverse effects due to flooding during excessive rainfall. This includes damage to downstream structures, overcharging existing drainage infrastructure, and erosion along conveyance pathways. Slight discrepancies between hydrograph runoff values and calculated runoff values shown are due to rounding and software calculation time interval restrictions. A. VICINITY MAP .... The map unit descriptions, along with the maps, can be used to determine the composition and properties of a unit. A map unit delineation on a soil map represents an area dominated by one or more major kinds of soil or miscellaneous areas. A map unit is identified and named according to the taxonomic classification of the dominant soils. Within a taxonomic class there are precisely defined limits for the properties of the soils. On the landscape, however, the soils are natural phenomena, and they have the characteristic variability of all natural phenomena. Thus, the range of some observed properties may extend beyond the limits defined for a taxonomic class. Areas of soils of a single taxonomic class rarely, if ever, can be mapped without including areas of other taxonomic classes. Consequently, every map unit is made up of the soils or miscellaneous areas for which it is named and some minor components that belong to taxonomic classes other than those of the major soils. Most minor soils have properties similar to those of the dominant soil or soils in the map unit, and thus they do not affect use and management. These are called noncontrasting, or similar, components. They may or may not be mentioned in a particular map unit description. Other minor components, however, have properties and behavioral characteristics divergent enough to affect use or to require different management. These are called contrasting, or dissimilar, components. They generally are in small areas and could not be mapped separately because of the scale used. Some small areas of strongly contrasting soils or miscellaneous areas are identified by a special symbol on the maps. If included in the database for a given area, the contrasting minor components are identified in the map unit descriptions along with some characteristics of each. A few areas of minor components may not have been observed, and consequently they are not mentioned in the descriptions, especially where the pattern was so complex that it was impractical to make enough observations to identify all the soils and miscellaneous areas on the landscape. The presence of minor components in a map unit in no way diminishes the usefulness or accuracy of the data. The objective of mapping is not to delineate pure taxonomic classes but rather to separate the landscape into landforms or landform segments that have similar use and management requirements. The delineation of such segments on the map provides sufficient information for the development of resource plans. If intensive use of small areas is planned, however, 11 Custom Soil Resource Report onsite investigation is needed to define and locate the soils and miscellaneous areas. An identifying symbol precedes the map unit name in the map unit descriptions. Each description includes general facts about the unit and gives important soil properties and qualities. Soils that have profiles that are almost alike make up a soil series. Except for differences in texture of the surface layer, all the soils of a series have major horizons that are similar in composition, thickness, and arrangement. Soils of one series can differ in texture of the surface layer, slope, stoniness, salinity, degree of erosion, and other characteristics that affect their use. On the basis of such differences, a soil series is divided into soil phases. Most of the areas shown on the detailed soil maps are phases of soil series. The name of a soil phase commonly indicates a feature that affects use or management. For example, Alpha silt loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, is a phase of the Alpha series. Some map units are made up of two or more major soils or miscellaneous areas. These map units are complexes, associations, or undifferentiated groups. A complex consists of two or more soils or miscellaneous areas in such an intricate pattern or in such small areas that they cannot be shown separately on the maps. The pattern and proportion of the soils or miscellaneous areas are somewhat similar in all areas. Alpha-Beta complex, 0 to 6 percent slopes, is an example. An association is made up of two or more geographically associated soils or miscellaneous areas that are shown as one unit on the maps. Because of present or anticipated uses of the map units in the survey area, it was not considered practical or necessary to map the soils or miscellaneous areas separately. The pattern and relative proportion of the soils or miscellaneous areas are somewhat similar. Alpha-Beta association, 0 to 2 percent slopes, is an example. An undifferentiated group is made up of two or more soils or miscellaneous areas that could be mapped individually but are mapped as one unit because similar interpretations can be made for use and management. The pattern and proportion of the soils or miscellaneous areas in a mapped area are not uniform. An area can be made up of only one of the major soils or miscellaneous areas, or it can be made up of all of them. Alpha and Beta soils, 0 to 2 percent slopes, is an example. Some surveys include miscellaneous areas. Such areas have little or no soil material and support little or no vegetation. Rock outcrop is an example. 12 Custom Soil Resource Report Harnett County, North Carolina Co—Coxville loam Map Unit Setting National map unit symbol: 3sp4 Elevation: 80 to 330 feet Mean annual precipitation: 38 to 55 inches Mean annual air temperature: 59 to 70 degrees F Frost-free period: 210 to 265 days Farmland classification: Farmland of statewide importance Map Unit Composition Coxville, drained, and similar soils: 85 percent Coxville, undrained, and similar soils: 10 percent Estimates are based on observations, descriptions, and transects of the mapunit. Outfall Pipe Total Drainage Area (acres) 9.55 Step 1. Determine the tailwater depth from channel characteristics below the pipe outlet for the design capacity of the pipe. If the tailwater depth is less than half the outlet pipe diameter.it is classified nninimtun tailwater condition. If it is greater than half the pipe diameter. it is classified maximum condition. Pipes that outlet onto wide fiat areas with no defined channel are assumed to have a nuninnun tailwater condition unless reliable flood stage elevations show otherwise. Based on the tailwater conditions determined in step 1. enter Figure S.06a or Figure 8.06b.and determine d,;,riprap size and minimum apron length (;L). The d;, size is the median stone size in a well-graded riprap apron. Step 3. Determine the apron thickness: Apron thickness = I.5 x d ,_ Minimum TW Maximum TW Apron Thickness(ft.) 1.125 0 Step 6. Fit the riprap apron to the site by making it level for the minimum length, La. from Figure 8.06a or Figure 8.06b. Extend the apron farther downstream and along channel banks until stability is assured. Keep the apron as straight as possible and align it with the flow of the receiving stream. Make any necessary alignment bends near the pipe outlet so that the entrance into the receiving stream is straight. Some locations may require lining of the entire channel cross section to assure stability. It may be necessary to increase the size of riprap where protection of the channel side slopes is necessary (Appendix 8.05). Where overfalls exist at pipe outlets or flows are excessive, a plunge pool should be considered, see page 8.06.8.
