DEMLR-Fayetteville Regional Office (FRO)staff met with Grede's new EHS Manager Tonya Edmonds and consultant Jeff Willoughby(Willoughby&Associates, Inc.) Mr. Willoughby presented an email correspondence between himself and Mike Lawyer DEMLR from January 2023 and that Grede was moving forward based on that guidance. "Mike Lawyer recommended for the facility to consider installation of a more controlled outlet structure on the retention pond (instead of the rip-rap weir) in order to potentially increase freeboard/storage capacity and decrease discharge events. ML also recommended to consider sampling upstream and/or downstream of where the facility's stormwater dischages enter the receiving stream to gather information on background copper levels and/or stream impacts." Mr. Willoughby said that Grede will continue to address the potential cause of the copper exceedances via recovery of spent sand ,increased housekeeping practices, improved materials management ect. DEMLR-FRO staff observed the outfalls and that there appeared no improvements to the retention pond(SD-001) nor material management. Ms. Edmonds indicated that Grede did put in to have the retention pond cleaned up. Ms. Edmonds did indicate that she was a new employee and was trying to get caught up on all the environmental permits and be compliant moving forward. DEMLR-FRO staff told Ms. Edmonds and Mr. Willoughby that staff would be back in 6 months for a Compliance Evaluation Inspection. This should give them time to implement the good housekeeping and retention pond maintenance. Site plan that was submitted with the application does reflect what is on site.
