Uebler Ph.D. Soil Specialist N.C. Division of Health Services NOV `T 1 U" ,A) 8 d V0 Frequently it is necessary to artificially lower the water table betore a septic tan[ soil absorption system can be installed. The obzecti,.e of such drainage is to maintain the water table 1 *cot below the bottom of the septic systern trenches at all times of the Year. Since the trenches e,-e normally installed 18 inches or deeper in the soil, the water table gust be [ept " inches below the soil surface in order to maintain a 1 foot separation between the trench bottom and water table. Artiticial drainage systems can be designed with ditches or drain tile. Ditches_ should not be used ir, sand or loamy sand soils as then require too much maintenance. The depth of the drainage system is controlled bN, the available outlet. Elevations betwee^ the outlet and the proposed System must be determined to establish the possible depth of the drainage system. The spacing between drains is determined from the Ellipse Equation. 5 2 2 4F (b- ai Q d Figure 1 1s presented to assist in defining the various terms of the egOation. 1. a is the drain Spacing :n feet. 2. F is the permeac.lity of the soil when saturated with water given in inches cer `IoLr. . The permeabi 1 1 ty depends greatly on the to •ture and Structure of the soil. Estimated pk-rme- abilities for the various te,tural arovrDs are as follows. Te ture Sand Sand / loam Loam Sandy clay, loam Clay loam clay Fermeability (i n/hOUr ) ' zo. 0 (D . 2 < u. I Structure greatly influences the permeability of the various textural groups. For this reason on -site measurement of permeability is best. and may be necessary. 3. b is the distance in feet from the draw down curve to the confining layer at the midpoint between drains. 4. a 1s the distance in feet from the drain to a confining layer. 5. Q is the drainage coefficient with units of in/hr. d The drainage coefficient is the inches of water depth to be removed in 24 hours. For our purposes we need to require that a 1 inch rainfall be removed within days or 48 hours The drainage coefticient would there- fore be (1.5 inches/24 hours or 0.t)2v8 inches/hour. This is a reasonable figure since many rainfalls will e,ceed 1 inch in :4 hours. Before using the Ellipse Equation one needs to determine the depth of the confining layer. This can be done with barinas on site. but for mast purposes, one can assum= a distance of lu feet to the contining layer, since it generally occurs =loser to the surface of the soil over much of the coastal plain in North Carolina. Two a amples of how to use the egUatlDn are given below: E,,ample 1. Given a loam soil with a permeability of 1.Q inch perkt-,our. Depth to confining layer is 10 feet. Depth of drains is 4 feet. Distance from the ground surface to the center of the draw down curve is C.5 feet, Drainace coefficient is 0.5 inches per day "= (.). u+)8 i n/hr. P = I . C) zn/hr b = 1 o. 0 feet - 2.5 feet = 7. 5 feet a = 10.0 feet - 4.() feet = 6.0 feet Q = (.1. 0208 i n/hr u. 0208 S -- 4 . 1.0 (56.25 - 76 ) Cr. ( )Zue 4 2U.25 S - Q.02v8 S = - Q4.2 S = 62 feet E ample 2. Given a sandy clay loam soil with a permeability of v.5 in/hr. Depth to confining layer is 10 feet. Depth of drains is 4 feet. Distance from ground Surface to draw = down curve is 2 5 feet. Drainage coefficient is ().U2()E in/hr. i F = 0.5 in/hr b = 1 ( ;i) feet - 2.5 feet = 7.5 feet a = feet -- 4.0 feet = 6. U feet 0 = Cl. U2(_)S i n /hr a r r n S 1 4 (-).5 2fi 25 S = (}. v21)6 S W 44 feet Since a minimum separation distance of 25 feet must be maintained between the septic tans trenches and the artificial drainage ; system. a septic tangy system cannot be installed using artificial drainage under these circumstances 7 If we assume that the depth to the confining layer is always 1() feet, the drains are 4 feet deep. the distance to the draw down curve is 2.5 feet and the drainage coefficient ().02UB. the Ellipse Equation simplifies to. S = 62.4 1= F feet where the soil permeability is the only variable. If details such as the depth of the Outlet are not yet available this equation and an estimate of the permeability from te•ture can be used to # determine if further investigation of the details is warranted. Where hardpans or fragipans are present in the soil profile, this § approach cannot be used, since these soil horizons act as confining # layers and the values of a and b would change. ' 5 1 \' 4 When designing the drainage system, pipe must be laid on sufficient grade to prevent it from clogging with soil. The minimum grade for 4 inch diameter tale 1s C).1 . This grade will provide a velocity at full flow in the the of O.8' ft/sec. A final word on the use of drainage in conjunction with septic systems --Artificial drainage should be viewed only as assisting the performance of the septic tangy, systems on a seasonal basis during the wet winter months. Artificial drainage must not be used in conjunction with large sewage systems. Under such circumstance the drainage system would act as a continuous point discharge for the partly treated sewage due to the ground water mounding under large sewage systems. The system would therefore act as a discharging system and not a soil absorption system. FIGURE 1.
